Would you rather your child come home and say "Mommy/Daddy, I am gay."
Or "Mommy/Daddy, I am Atheist."?

Aww, Brucey. Don't get like that, this is a place of love! Can't you tell?
The fact is, most people would call them "haters", why? Because they are haters. I don't think Christians who condone homosexuality and Atheism are hypocrites, I think that they're rational people who understand different people believe different things. And those are the Christians I respect. I know this may be a shock to you, as anything outside of what you’ve been taught is probably “scary”, but some Christians are not judgmental. Read some of the answers, some of these people say that they’d love their children just as much, without trying to change them. And others are clearly, I say again, HATERS. Or at the very least, ignorant and intolerant.

I also did not ask this question to 'trap' or 'trick' anyone. I was hoping that maybe it could persuade people to think.

Haha, Jan.. Wow.
If I had children, and they told me they were Christian, I'd be fine with it. As long as they weren't judgmental or cruel with their beliefs. As far as the "I can't get off unless I
have sex with a diseased-ridden boar", good job showing what kind of person you are. I hope you don't have children.

Oh wait... you say you have a son. I hope he somehow manages to become a fair and loving person, despite his mother.

If I had to pick...I would take the one my child said and I would acept it...I love my child no matter what his beliefs are...everyone has a choice to do what he wants in this life...and it is up to you to decide what is best for you.

I am not sure what you were expecting. This question is both a trick question and ridiculous. I say a trick because maybe either in your mind is ok, but you know damn well for Christians they wouldn't condone either. So you trapped them into making it look like they are as most people would call "haters"....woo hooo. Good for you. As far as ridiculous I think that pretty much sums itself up. The fact is that by Christian beliefs neither is acceptable. Not tolerating something you don't believe in or condone doesn't make you someone who hates others. What would be more insulting to you? A Christian who doesn't stand by their beliefs and is a hypocrite or someone who does stand by their beliefs? Just because I don't agree with how you live your life or what you believe doesn't mean that I can't show or have genuine care for you. Doesn't mean I wouldn't die for you if need be. Nor does it mean that I hate you. It's a joke that while people who don't agree with Christians can either claim they still respect them or justify their own verbal attacks towards them and their beliefs as being ok, yet because a Christian is openly against things that are against their belief they are labeled as either bigots or haters or whatever other names you can come up with. You were right the question is telling, but not about the people who are answering it.

No matter what my child said I would accept and love them. I would rather neither but if it was either it would not change how much I love them. I would try and help them through whatever issues they were facing. Just as I do now.
Being gay gives them a whole set of problems that I would hope they wouldn't have to face. Being atheist would mean somehow I had truly failed as a parent and a Christian to show them the truth.

Atheist. Atheism is chosen ignorance. Since there is no way to prove God doesn't exist, the simple possibility that there might be a God ends the sense in holding this view.
Atheism, in the strong form, is Illogical.
I pray that I don't hear either from my kids, and hope that my wife and my training, and that the Lord's help, is sufficient.
And I don't believe people are born gay. And I don't dislike gay people. And homosexuality is sin according the God's word. I'm not judging, just reading.

How about you?
Daddy/mommy I am Christian.
Daddy/mommy I can't get off unless I
have sex with a diseased-ridden boar.
"mommy/daddy" ?? It sounds like you are talking about 12 year old children. geez....
My son was born a male child. He is being raised to become an honest man - of integrety and character. I am not raising him to be a he/she or to dress like someone from a freak-show.

I wouldn't want to hear them saying either to me.Ok I tried to rationalize this and as a mother I can't say I'd be ok with either.
But, being an Atheist, I could at least pray that God will come and allow them to see things differently and more openly. I see more hope here, than being gay.

i am pmsl at how ludicrous this statement is!!
i dont care if my son is gay (he's 4 months old) and if he ISNT atheist i'd be amazed and a little dissappointed, but i could tolerate christianity..i'm very open minded :)

Jack, I love my children unconditionally, so neither one would bother me. I would continue to love and support them in their life choices. I have a son who is agnostic now.

If they came home and said they were gay (I don't have any kids btw) I'd be like... ok- you need any seat cushions?
If they came home and said they were atheists... I wouldn't be surprised.

Can't choose, both would be a heartache. Still we (children included) all get to make decisions in life don't we?
