I think you have highlighted a very good question here, why do people do litter? well maybe because a large amount of people do litter and this I think may lead to a large quantity of people following the original litter buggers, basically because some do it more people think it is fine to do it and so alot are doing it? did you get that! I think it is marvellous you are doing a clean up operation and I think more of these should take place, I truly believe if more of us had to get up and clean up all the litter this would lead to less litter buggers! so there does not seem to much of a solution to this problem, I have just thought , some of the blame could lay with the government, in that the local councils do not provide enough litter bins around the local and surrounding areas, if we had more bins scattered about then there would be less need for people to drop their litter on the ground! So maybe we need to push councils to do their part.
Another point I would like to say about the litter problem is that some people drop their litter on the floor when they have no where else to put it (even though we know this is wrong), but what I really can not abide at all, is when I drive down a main road and see a bunch of litter along the sides or embankments of the busy roads, I ask the question as to why have people not left this litter in their car's until they stop or arrive at their destination and then throw it in to a rubbish bin? this problem just continues, lets hope something can realistically be done about litter in the future or it will only increase in size??

People just seem to think that there is some magic litter fairy that will pick up after them. Is it so hard to keep your junk inside your car until you get home? You could just as easily leave it inside your car then throw it away once you get home. I have even picked up bags from fast food places and set them on the cars that have littered by my house. I figure why not??By the way if you haven't figured it out I hate people that litter

Because they have no regard or respect for the property they are violating and:
Because they can just get away with it.
Make the litter bug pick up garbage on any street for 3 days minimum on first offense wearing all orange.
At least one street will be a little cleaner for awhile.
Second time caught: Use your imagination.......

Laziness and arrogance. They feel entitled to have others clean up after them. I don't think we can blame any one group of people it is not just Americans who litter, have you ever been to Mexico? Many Mexicans care about how their land looks, but there is still a lot of trash on the streets. I am sure there are people all over the world who care about keeping their land clean and still others who don't care.

Well over time people do that... it could be becasue their parents have done it so they want to be like their parents or they think its cool... it just says that they are too LAZY to get their fat *** over to the garbage can and put it in the garbage ... this is the kind of sociebty we have become... LAZY and selfish...my friend litters all the time when she does i pick it up and when she isnt looking i put it in her locker... others make fun of me but oh well....

Because they're too lazy to wait to throw their trash...just kidding
We do not know what is their motive for littering, but it is making a big impact on the enviroment

People are a creature of habit. Most people who litter have seen their family members and/or friends do it over and over again. I believe littering is a learned trait. If parents would teach their kids to have respect and value for where they live and what they have we would have a much cleaner and safer environment to live in.

I see this also. Personally, I put my trash where it belongs.
I don't even let my kids throw trash on the ground. And if they do, I have them pick it up. As a result, I have even found my son picking up other people's trash.

Because they didn't learn that it is "wrong" or "bad" to litter.
We, like in the song in "South Pacific", have to be "very carefully taught" to be whatever it was that eventually, roughly, by excluding behaviours, led to whoever we became.
Some learn the "proper", "acceptable" or "expected" limits to whatever we do.
But, some do not learn that "actions have consequences" and that all habits have limits that keep us wtihin "civility" -according to those around us.

I don't think there is one reason people litter, most likely it is different for different people... maybe they are lazy, maybe they think someone will pick up after them, maybe they rationalize it by thinking one person's garbage doesn't make a difference, or maybe they do it because their parents did.
