After having two kids I have went from 134 to 204 in the last 4 years. I see alot of people walking to get exercise and I want to know if walking (with a healthy diet) really helps. And what the ideal weight would be for me. I'm 5'9 and a medium build.

The hardest part in losing weight is agreeing to do so, which you have already done. Any form of movement burns calories, if you have stairs at your home I suggest going up and down them twice or even three times as much as you did before.

Yes, walking does help burn a few calories, but its going to take a very long time to see any weight lose just by walking and having a healthy diet. Instead of walking you can begin jogging, and you can start doing some cardio aswell, which is basically doing simple exercises with your legs such as riding a bike and jogging.

And a healthy and fit weight for your height would be around 135-140. But not all mothers have abs of steel and are able to run one mile in 7 minutes. My mother is around 135-140 and shes only 5"2. Weighing a few pounds over average isn't that big of a deal unless you want to impress people.

walking does help . . . it needs to be at a brisk pace and sustained for at least 30 minutes (preferably an hour) . . . at least 5 days/week

once you start losing weight with walking, i would suggest getting into an exercise program . . . a personal trainer would also really help you find out what exercises you need to do and how often you need to do them to get the best results

the ideal weight for a 5'9'' woman is 135-155 . . . but weight is somewhat deceiving . . . a lot of people who are at a healthy weight have a relatively high body fat percentage . . . ideal for a woman is about 22%-30% . . . so it would be better for you to weigh 165 with 26% body fat than 150 with 34% body fat

so, you should aim to lose 50-65 pounds . . . that is a long term (10-14 months) goal though, so make smaller benchmark goals for yourself (like lose 10 pounds the first month, 8 the second, and so on)

According to the BMI chart, you are in the 31 range. In order to in the healthy range, you should be within the 24.9-18.5 range which means that you should weight anywhere between 124-158 pounds.

If you look at how much you should lose, it will be overwhelming. But, don't look at it that way or else you will either
a) give up
b) stress out, try some fad diet that will not work and might even freak out your body.

Take it a step at a time, control your intake, slowly reintroduce yourself to exercise. And realize that this is a lifetime commitment and so let your body re-adjust.

I lost like 30 ilbs with ediets.com, and it is mainly about diet control.

You sound just like me, minus the kids... At least you had a reason... I just couldn't keep my mouth shut...until now. I went to Jenny Craig. I weighed 230 (I thought I was gonna weigh 240). They helped me pick out a goal weight of 145 lbs (I'm 5'8").They put me on a 1500 calorie. They showed me how to eat 6 meals a day (3 main and 3 snacks) and what is "unlimited" (brocolli, zuchinni, asparagus, artichokes, dark veggies). They after losing 10 pounds, they lowered me to 1200 calories. Just make sure your main meals are less than 300 calories (LeanCuisine, HealthyChoice) and snacks at 100 calories. And then gradually add in walking or biking or whatever it maybe that you'll have fun doing (there are a lot of dancing workout videos that are fun!). Since April, I've lost 17 lbs! I hope I helped!!

i'm not sure what your ideal body weight should be since it can vary from person to person. try walking 30 - 45 minutes to start with every other day. on alternate days work out with weights. if that and a healthy diet don't work you might want to see your doctor and have your thyroid checked. ideally you should lose 1-2 lbs a week. just remember that you didn't gain the weight overnight and you won't lose it overnight. programs such as weight watchers and curves are very helpful.

there is no such thing as ideal weight - look at body fat percentage
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Your ideal weight would be 145-150. Walking is great for your heart and for depression, but not a great calorie burner. For that you want a short (15-20 min) period of a more strenuous exercise such as cross country skiing, tennis, running, etc. To get significant calorie reduction from walking you would have to walk for three hours each day.

I suggest a mix of walking & running-walk 15 mins, run 10, walk 15, run 15, etc.

there are charts that tell you how much you should weigh for your height
walking , power walking , does work , you have to walk fast enough to get your heart rate up though , not an easy stroll with your grandma. good luck!
