If the box springs are to be supported by a metal frame and bed slats, all you have to do is measure the length between the angle irons making up the bed frame. Measure exactly and have 1 x 4 pieces of lumber cut a half inch shorter, (to make it easier to place them in the frame.) They will be roughly 60 1/2" wide. But do measure the bed frame, the frames themselves can vary a little in width.
You can get by with four slats if a child is sleeping alone in the bed. If an adult or two adults are using the bed, you should plan on five slats.
Anyplace that sells lumber can cut the boards for you, a lumber yard or a big home store like Lowe's or Home Depot.

I know the perfect solution if you are just starting with woodworking and also if you have already experience with it. I reccomend to give a look to this website ( woodworkingplans.kyma.info ) You can find a lot of woodworking plans and you will be able to manage the projects with a CAD/DWG software. It allows you to modify the projects and to alter the arragements. If you are a beginner this is the easiest way to start, it's the best approach to woodworking; and if you already have experience you will find a lot of ideas and inspirations to improve your abilities with woodwork. You can get the on Amazon (see below) but I've also seen them on Craigslist for pretty cheap although, it usually comes with the actual bed frame as well.
