Here's the scoop: I moved cross country to New York City a couple of months ago without a job lined up. I moved primarily to advance my career in the retail industry. After 2 months of living in this expensive city without a job, I was relieved to get my first offer yesterday for an Associate Merchandise Planner position. Though relieved, I didn't feel too excited. The salary offered was about $5k less than I had hoped, but about $5k more than I was making in my last job in CA. However, I do not have experience in this particular job. My last job was related but not very closely.

It would definitely be a great start, but I don't feel like I'd be totally content with the pay, especially with the cost of living here. It's on the low end for the salary range on salary.com for NYC. I am new to this salary negotiation stuff and would greatly appreciate some good advice. Thanks so much!

Thanks for the great answers so far. I just want to add that while I do not have experience in this exact job, I do have about 4 years experience in the industry.

You sound hesitant and that will hurt in an attempt to negotiate your salary. Also if your experience is limited, what do you have in your corner to negotiate with? It sounds to me like you have answer two questions to begin to negotiate:
1. Are you prepared to lose this job should the negotiations go sour?
2. Do you feel they would be unable to find someone with your limited experience in this field to fill this position for the same money?
If you answered Yes to number 1 and No to number 2 then negotiate with them. If not, take the job and use it as an opportunity to gain experience. Alternatively, you can mention that you're going to take the job, you were hoping that it would pay more but are willing to work hard to prove yourself so long as there is room to move upwards in salary in a year. Good luck.

Congratulations on your new situation. It sounds like you've had an adventure. The way we usually suggest negotiating is doing exactly what you've done. Research what the salaries are in the area for that position, and let your future employer know what skills and attributes you are bringing to the table. Based on your experience, and your skills you would naturally like to be close to the top of the pay scale. Hopefully you meet somewhere in the middle.

This case is a little different. This is your first offer in 2 months of living in NYC. You may want to accept the position, and then when it is time for your first review negotiate from there. Good luck with everything.

You might not want to turn it down - that's your call. But it's fair to tell them that it's less than you were hoping for given the high cost of living in NYC, and ask when your salary would be reviewed and what you might expect if your performance is good, also ask what the pay range is for that job and what the next job step up would be and how long it might take to get there.

Good luck.

Be trustworthy - tell them you're very involved yet that this could properly be a super decrease. probable they're keen to earnings your artwork and no rely if this is stable supply you a enhance in 6 months. yet do now no longer make your decision on hourly pay by myself - each now and then to get the situation you opt to be, you would be waiting to choose to take a step down. If the coaching they supply is unfastened to you, you may evaluate the cost it brings you indoors the destiny. How a lot could desire to you pay in case you had to bypass out and get this coaching and pay for it? How a lot greater desirable will you be waiting to make indoors the long-term by using utilising having the coaching? then there are different subject concerns that are significant in a decision like this: Is domestic dog clever a much better acceptable place to artwork for different reason? Are they greater desirable versatile with schedules, time or have greater desirable acceptable advantages? Does one or different supply you larger holiday or have a 401K plan with an business enterprise business enterprise matching contribution? gas is intense priced, so is there any significant massive difference indoors the area to holiday between the positions? earnings is a super deal yet different subject concerns count variety huge form.

I think its a great start if its $5K more than what you made. I have a rule of thumb at least 25% of my current salary. Learn as much as you can and move on after that. GOOD LUCK!

well i think you should have started the negotiations from day one .. mention it to a co-worker see what they say but i doubt it would happen for you.. dont go to your manager first..cause youll probably get mad ... (if you know what im saying) just use this as bill pay and experience and look for another one on ur spare time and wait till either u get a raise or a better job... and let me know how it goes cause im contemplating moving myself but i want to get a better job first...

Take the job without haggling. Once you're established start fishing out your CV and haggle with people who can't hurt you. Make sense?
