If the silence (or the gibberish) is too frustrating, simply hang up. The parents will call back if they have anything important to add to the conversation..

The only person that I put my kids on the phone with before they could carry on a conversation was their dad because he asked me to! Once they could speak clearly, I would ask the person I was speaking to, if it was a casual conversation, if **** could say hello. If, and only if, they said yes I would allow a hello, how are you, it was nice to talk to you.
I agree it is annoying and rude when a young kid is put on the phone and left there!
While we are venting, I also don't appreciate it when I am talking to someone and they carry on several conversations with their children at the same time. Don't get me wrong, I know that kids need to interrupt for important stuff, but I have taught my children to say excuse me and wait for me to answer them. I wait for a break in the conversation and if the problem is urgent, I ask if I can call my conversation buddy back.
They have been taught that if you are bleeding or on fire you can interrupt no matter what. If not, you may wait your turn!
Thanks for letting me get this off my chest!

Um, why would someone put their baby on the phone? And other little kids? Just say "Hello, so and so, How are you? Have a nice day" then sit there or hang up. And tell your friends that's really odd. I haven't a single friend or sibling without kids, and I've never had anyone do that, nor have I done it to anyone else, not even my kids' granny!

My sis in law would do this to us with our neice, before she was "really" talking. I love them both but 5 min of "say hi....say hi....say hi..." in the background is way obnoxious. when she got back on the line we would put her on the phone with our dog for a comparable amount of time. she got the hint.

Isn't it too early to teach kids phone etiquette?
Let kids be kids for a while and they sure grow up fast
and then you can start teaching them etiquette.
