Out of curiosity, how many of you have been exposed to, or have been offered a system of religious beliefs, exercises, and traditions but NOT the presence of the living God?

I personally believe that religion makes no sense without God's living and active presence. Without that, it would feel like being bound by arbitrary rules and regulations. Ugh@ that.

to clarify, I'm not only talking about religions that don't believe IN God...I'm talking about people living it, without a relationship with God being an active part. This includes Christians that tell you to believe in God, and follow all the rules, but don't count on God being an actual part of your life on a daily basis.

There are even many churches that take that unspiritual approach, that rely primarily on things like psychology and philosophy to preach and teach. The problem is, there is no power in those to save you, only the Gospel.

Religion isnt about being good on your terms by your own standards. Religion is about letting go of your evil self and embracing Gods goodness.

Without religion, a god is just a being with power beyond that of humanity. Humanity may or may not be aware of this being's existence. In the real world, Deism is probably the closest you'll get to god without religion, since few deists actually worship the deistic god. Without a god, religion is a set of rituals and customs. Forms of Buddhism seem to cope well enough without a god.

Buddhism, and Taoism are two religions who do not worship a God. They believe that the divine is in all of us. A concept which makes sense to me.

In my opinion most organized religions cause people to be bound by arbitrary rules, and regulations. The punishment for disbelief in eternal damnation, a concept that I have the utmost contempt for,

God without religion is possible but religion without God is questionable.
Without God it is only an "organization" like the United Nations that look after human interests. It just so happened that most members have each a religion of its own but in their tennets they serve without prejudice to their individual belief.
The word religion already mean a constraint to super natural so what you are asking is not relevant.

I am Jodo Shin Shu Buddhist and I do fine without a god.

I wish others would think the same way. But I totally agree with you on this subject matter.

There are some religions that people can observe without believing in its God or gods.

They are: Judaism(monotheistic, but, atheists can still follow), Buddhism(polytheistic, but atheists can still follow, because none of its deities are considered the Creator of the universe), Taoism(polytheistic, but the same as Buddhism), Jainism(polytheistic, but the same as Buddhism), Hinduism(pantheistic, but, one can follow without worshipping its deity/deities)Confucianism(monotheistic, but, can be practiced without worshipping God), Sikhism(monotheistic but can be practiced without worshipping God).

You'd do well to learn more about the religions that are out there. Buddhism, for instance, is neither much about rules nor about God.

Well I see christianity not as a religion but a relationship with God... The "rules and regulations" is just our way of showing how grateful we are to him that we listen and respect his ways... After all he did give us life... Like for a friend who you have a close relationship with... If you know your friend doesn't like something and if you care for and respect your friend your going to respect the fact that they dont like it and not do it....

There are a few religions out there that are essentially atheistic.

Religion is used to fulfill a psychological need for dogma and ritual. It is seperate from the psychological need to believe in deities.
