Like most television shows, it could be a trick. Maybe her parents are planning the best surprise party in the history of surprise parties. party. Surprising is an element we take for granted.
If they really did not plan on doing anything for her birthday, we have to consider the question, "How is the relationship between their parents." Are there any marital problems occurring? There may be financial issues that the parents are going through. Birthdays come and go , but families are forever.
Tell your friend not to be selfish and to be thankful for what she does have.

It does sound pretty cold but we have no idea behind their last minute decision. She perhaps did something she wasn't suppose to or perhaps they couldn't afford it.. what matters is that she has you as a friend and you care. Show her you care. Some nice flowers with a personalized note will really do the trck. something personalized is most likely to be remembered for a long time than cards that are pre-printed.

Do your best to make events special for her how you can. Unfortunately, we cannot choose our parents. It is really sad that a parent could treat their kid this way. Be a true friend as that is the best gift you can offer. I disagree with approaching the parents. If they are this way, then bringing it to their attention most likely will only make things worse for your friend. Sometimes the best family kids can have is their group of friends.

Wow!!! That is horrible. As a parent I try to make my kids birthday special. They were special to me so I try to be special to them. Being a great that I feel you are should help through this. Maybe gather a few friends and do something special for her it may not be her birthday any more but at least she'll know somebody cares.

Damn. That's harsh. I'm 26 years old and on my last birthday I got a card, flowers and a note saying that rent was free that month - woo-hoo!!! And my dad ALWAYS calls me or tells me that "such-in-such years ago today, you made me the happiest dad in the world!" and I'm old. Her parents suck. Unless they were just planning a super-huge suprise party like someone before me mentioned. That would be sweet.

Your friend should tell her parents how they made her feel. Atleast then she will know that she tried and can feel a little better about the situation.
