I've been on Prednisone for 8 years, so I know what it's like to gain the weight. It's in most part a retention of fluids, so you just have to control her eating habits, feed her healthy food, do excises and cut down on sodium big time, as salt also retains fluid. After she's been on it for a while, her body will get used to it and slowly her weight will diminish as she controls her eating and keeps it to a stable level. It also has to do with the dose, the larger the dose, the more she eats...so as the dose decreases, the faster she loses the weight!
I lost about 25 pounds of excess prednisone weight after about a year, now I control it.

Good luck, and I hope shes not on it for a long time as it is also an immunosupressant steroid. She's too young for that.
Best of luck to your daughter!

It's normal for swelling while on prednisone. Once she stops taking it, the swelling will go down and she'll lose the weight again. It's often caused by the body retaining water while on it, but it'll stay in her body up to 10 days after her last does and she needs to be weaned off of it and not stopped cold turkey.

Additionally you should not be stressing to an 11-year old about her weight. That is how eating disorders start.

For one I take prednisone and when I first started the doctors put me on a larger dose 30mg but right now I am down to 3mg and don't have that weight problem anymore. Ask the doctor if he can lower her dose. Remember the higher the dose the more you want to eat and the more weight you gain.

Any steroid like that will cause her to gain weight. The problem with prednisone is that it helps your lungs but attacks your heart. Please talk to a pediatric pulmonologist (lung specialist) and perhaps a nutritionist, as what she eats will be even more important because the prednisone will increase her weight through no fault of anyone.

Prednisone does that because it is a steriod. The best she can do is eat healthy and exercise. Definately check with her doctor to see if they have any suggestions.

The doctor will also know what exercise she is capable of doing.

YES!! Please listen to me. For the asthma get a Chihuahua dog. Something about them reduces the symptoms. It worked for my mother. As for the weight. NO soda or milk. Make her diet meat and vegetables only. No sugar, starch, or grain products. Give this 3 months and you WILL see a change.

I think the best way is to eat right. I lost ten pounds that way. Try to have her eat in moderation. Seeing that she has serious asthma, it wouldn't be safe for her to do any activity that would provoke an attack. So exercise is out.

the end result from no steriod might be death from a severe asthma attack. consult with a pediatric pulmonologist for other options.
