John Chapter 10, Verse 1 (through 5) Is talking about "False Christs"- "False Teachers".

People coming and saying "I am Christ, follow me, you must do this, that and the other thing".

People Saying " I have the way it has been showen to me by an angel or woodpecker or Image or vision-you must do this that or the other thing.

"True Christians" know the voice of their sheperd (leader) and that is the "LIVING WORD" Jesus Christ.

From the commentary of the New American (Catholic) Bible:

1 [1-21] The good shepherd discourse continues the theme of attack on the Pharisees that ends John 9. The figure is allegorical: the hired hands are the Pharisees who excommunicated the cured blind man. It serves as a commentary on John 9. For the shepherd motif, used of Yahweh in the Old Testament, cf Exodus 34; Genesis 48:15; 49:24; Micah 7:14; Psalm 23:1-4; 80:1.

2 [1] Sheepfold: a low stone wall open to the sky.

3 [4] Recognize his voice: the Pharisees do not recognize Jesus, but the people of God, symbolized by the blind man, do.

4 [6] Figure of speech: John uses a different word for illustrative speech than the "parable" of the synoptics, but the idea is similar.

5 [7-10] In John 10:7-8, the figure is of a gate for the shepherd to come to the sheep; in John 10:9-10, the figure is of a gate for the sheep to come in and go out.

6 [8] [Before me]: these words are omitted in many good early manuscripts and versions.

7 [16] Other sheep: the Gentiles, possibly a reference to "God's dispersed children" of John 11:52 destined to be gathered into one, or "apostolic Christians" at odds with the community of the beloved disciple.

In John 9 you see Jesus heal a man born blind. The pharisees go berzerk because he was healed on the sabbath, against the finicky rules they have built up on top of the Old Covenant and made people follow. Since he is so happy, and can see Jesus is at least a prophet for such a miracle, they get offended, and kick him out of the temple - "you were steeped in sin at birth".

So Jesus is passing judgement on the religious leaders of the time in the immediate sense. But then on all religious leaders not actually authorised by God.

The gate He goes on to say is Himself. This presumably refers to the fact that acceptance with God is through His sacrifice on the cross. This would mean religious leaders after His coming, if they are indeed from God, will go in through the gate of Jesus's salvation. They won't teach people that Jesus is just a good man, or didn't exist or suchlike messages; they will teach that He is Messiah and Saviour, and will teach how to enter God's Kingdom the correct way, and develop in faith.

Jesus explains the meaning of John 10:1, I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

He goes on to tell us that He is the shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep (His followers) and then in verse 18, He tells us that He laid down his life by his own accord.

His complete answer is in Chapter 10:verse 7-21. He Jesus, is the only way to God.

It certainly doesn't mean what trinitarians what it to mean! They say that John is claiming that Jesus is equal to God. But if that is the case then he is also saying that Jesus broke the Sabbath! That is absurd! Jesus lived by the Law PERFECTLY as he was perfect and would have NEVER broken the Law! In Matt 12:12 Jesus made the statement that "it is lawful to do a good thing on the Sabbath" Curing a man certainly falls into that category!

This scripture is talking about Jesus being the shepherd of the little flock. The ones that go to heaven.
Matthew 7:15 tells who the plunderers are ..they are the false prophets that enter into the congregation only to turn others away from serving Jehovah God.

Jesus is the door...in other words no one gets to the father except through faith in Jesus. He died for our sins and is in a privileged position. John 10:17,18

He has hand picked these ones that go to heaven.....the little flock..rev 14:1

John 10:16 talks about the "other sheep" that do not go to heaven.

Read Acts 5:38,39 If it is from God it will not be overthrown.

John 10:1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
The Lord Jesus Christ is offering the earthly kingdom to Israel and He is telling the Nation of Israel that they could only enter into the kingdom one way. He is the door. John 10: 7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. John 10: 9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

Many who hear the word of Christ, do not understand it, because they will not. But we shall find one scripture expounding another, and the blessed Spirit making known the blessed Jesus. Christ is the Door. And what greater security has the church of God than that the Lord Jesus is between it and all its enemies? He is a door open for passage and communication. Here are plain directions how to come into the fold; we must come in by Jesus Christ as the Door. By faith in him as the great Mediator between God and man. Also, we have precious promises to those that observe this direction. Christ has all that care of his church, and every believer, which a good shepherd has of his flock; and he expects the church, and every believer, to wait on him, and to keep in his pasture. (Jn 10:10-18)

Historically: There would be a door on the outer walls of a city that sheep could get in through, but must be admitted by the gatekeeper. So trying to get through by other means is unacceptable.

It is merely saying in parable form, "No one enters Heaven to see my Father except by me" (Jesus). There is no other way to the Father but through Christ so those that try to get by on good works (see Ephesians) are just out of luck. These would be the folks trying to climb over the fence and not enter the gate to the sheep pen.
