I have a Minolta SLR 35mm camera and am interested in purchasing a soom lense for it. Do I have to put a Minolta lense or could I purchase another manufactuers model, and if so I need suggestions on what to purchase.

No. Any manufacture's lens will do fine, BUT be sure that the MOUNT is identical to what your camera requires.

Check with a good camera shop, but I think if you seek a lens with a "Minolta Mount" you should do fine.

Minolta has had two different lens mounts in the past. One was for their manual focus cameras like the XG-7 or X-700. The other was for their autofocus cameras like all of the Maxxum series. You need to make sure the lens you purchase has a Maxxum compatible mount if you have a Maxxum or a Minolta MD mount if it is an older X-series camera.

Any lens manufacturer should work OK on your camera as long as the mount is the right one. In fact, since Minolta has gone out of the camera business, sometimes an independent brand like Sigma or Tamron is better because repair parts are still available for them if they break.

i have a 35 mm minolta and the mount is either MD or MC depending on the camera. Sigma came out with some great lens for the minolta company and the lens are resonably priced also. i love sigma lens. you can find nice used sigma lens on ebay for a great price one because most people do not know what they are selling. and they got it used from someone else.
