Get in touch with your local waste management company. If they have a program in place, they will take your monitor. If it's in working condition, try donating to a school, church, or other non-profit agency that can get some use out of it.
Lastly, you can try to get a hold of a computer company in your town to see if they have a recommendation.
Hope this helps.

Put it on Freecycle. Freecycle links people who have things they no longer want or need with those who can make use of them, thereby reducing the amount or re-usable goods going to landfill.
It's an internet based scheme with almost four million members world-wide and groups in loads of countries. It's run by volunteers and membership is free. The main rule is that anything offered must be free, legal and appropriate for all ages. You can ask for stuff as well as giving it away. I'm a member of my local Kingston group here in south-west London, and I've shifted stuff I no longer wanted but which was too good to throw away (and which my local charity shops were unable to take, like electrical stuff). You can find groups in whichever country you're in at www.freecycle.org

Ask the garbage people that pick up your garbage in the morning or whenever, where I am if you put it by the road and give them 5 to 10$ depending on what it is then they'll take it & recycle it, yes it costs but in the end it is worth it :)

Look up the web site from the company where you purchased your new monitor, they and/or the manufacturers make rebates available for recycled hardware. It is worthy cause, and you get a few quid to spend on more computer stuff!

Look in your local yellow pages.
There are places that recycle or reuse old computer equipment - and will sometimes pay you a few dollars for stuff if it still works.

The best way, if the old one still works, is to contribute it to a Charity. Someone will put it to good use and none of it's parts will go into a landfill.

if your monitor is not broken why not see if anyone in your local freecycle group would like it. that would save on land fill and help others as well.

phone your local council about having it picked up,
or if you can or have to drop it off, and where, when.
each council is different.
