Here are some suggestions I have (from personal experience):

First, if you have stairs in your house, block them off before she comes home! She will be "high" from the painkillers and anesthesia, and she won't have very good balance. This is normal, but it should not last more than 24 hours.

Also, if she has a cat tree I'd suggest taking it away...you don't want her climbing or jumping for a few days, because she might tear her stitches. Same goes for any big toys that she might tumble around with.

Make her a nice warm bed, and give her soft toys (I don't recommend catnip toys, though) so she can cuddle up. Maybe even buy her something new, as a "good girl" reward. Lie with her on the floor so she knows you are there. My cat was scared after, because she had been left alone at the vet. She wanted me to be near her.

Check her wound daily. Just peek at it to make sure she isn't picking at the stitches. If she does, you'll need an Elizabethan collar (aka a "cone"). There will be a little dried blood around the cut, but if you see it oozing (for more than a minute or two) I'd suggest having it checked out, to make sure she's ok. Also, if it starts to look puffy, red, or swollen, call the vet! It's always better to be safe than sorry.

One final suggestion: if ms. kitty doesn't like pills, ask your vet for "pill pockets" - they're little treats that look kinda like hollowed out Combos snacks, except they're soft. Stick a pill in and the kitty will eat it right up! My kitty liked them so much she begged for them even after she was healed up (minus the pill, of course!)

Good luck!!

P.S. - > my kitty (now a year old) was my first too. I was scared, but be strong for her. She'll be just fine!

don't listen to the rubbish about letting the cat have one litter! I spayed my cat before she could have a litter and here she is, 17+ and just as happy as ever, my best friend! so good for you, keeping the pet population down is the right thing to do as a responsible pet owner. All the cats have been different in the way they've been when we brought them home-- my baby was kinda out of it because of the stuff they used to put her under, so she was kinda like drunk almost. the last two we spayed (are still kittens- it wasnt' that long ago) the one, who is just full of it, she was playing and bouncing around right away, even though she was supposed to be taking it easy, but she was fine. the other one, she is a runt and she had gone into heat once and the poor thing was just soooo uncomfortable when she was in heat, so she was better when she was spayed, just happy that we actually brought her back home. she was more upset just for visiting the vet then she was for what they did I think :)
I hope this helps you and gives you an idea. All you can do is follow the vet's instructions and show love to your kitty and you'll both be just fine :)

I used to be a vet tech for 2 years and have also had 2 of my own cats spayed.
The healing time is very very fast! Just make sure the incision doesn't show any sign of infection which would be swelling or pus.
Most of the time they don't even show any difference in behavior with the exception of licking the wound.
Give her lots of attention as she's been through a traumatic time and missed you.

Side Note: It's actually reduces the risk of breast cancer in cats and dogs if they are spayed before their first litter.

I have had many, many cats fixed and I've never used pain meds or e collars with any of them. Just follow vet's advice and ask questions. It's a good idea to write questions down as you think of them so you don't forget anything when you go to pick her up. She will find a nice, quiet, comfy place to rest when she comes home. You might want to keep her away from any other pets you have for a couple of days. Just let her rest and watch her incision for any swelling or seeping. She'll be fine. Most of my cats are back to normal in a couple of days but Allie hid in the closet for a week. I had to carry food and water to her there. Call the vet if your girl isn't better within 3 days of bringing her home. BTW, all cats need to be fixed unless they are champion breeder quality pedigrees.

Make sure that she is supervised after the surgery. She shouldn't lick the area for a while. She needs to wear those collars that prevent scratching/licking the incision.

She will most likely be resting, so do check on her every few hrs to make sure everything is ok.

Provide fresh water as usual, and food, if she wants. She may not want to eat or drink much, however. Perfectly normal issue after surgery.

Check her incision area frequently to be sure it hasn't been touched. If bleeding occurs, or something unusual is suspected, call your vet asap.

Good luck! Oh, and your vet may likely keep her at the hospital for the night. They will call you when it's safe to bring her home.

Much love! Meow.

She may beg for food, but the first night I would not feed her, or give her very little, and a little water. Because of the anesthetic, if you feed her alot, she may be sick all over everywhere.

Usually the first day they will be wobbly and sleep alot. That's normal. Keep her inside for a few days.

She may lick her stitches, that's normal. Just keep an eye out that she doesn't pull them out. Though I had one that did and it healed fine.

There may be a big lump at the incision, but that too is normal. It is the stitches under the surface stitches. And it goes away.

It takes 3-5 days for them to be back to normal, and about 7-10 days for the incision to heal.

Pick her up carefully, remember that she just had a hysterectomy. She should be fine. Your vet will also give you written instructions. Remind him if he doesn't.

It is better to have them done when they are younger as there is least change of problems down the road. Check with your vet as to what age they should do it. The kitten may be quite for a few days. Keep her dry and clean and don't let her play to hard. Also watch her around any other pets if you have any so she doesn't get hurt. Also ask the vet what time of day they are going to do it. If in the morning you may be able to bring her home in the afternoon or evening.

My cat was spayed young before any litters. I felt so bad because I thought she was in pain. I felt a lot of sympathy since I was recovering from a Cesarean while she was recovering also. But turns out she was doing better than me. She didn't act different or seem to be in pain at all. she was still jumping high and everything. Don't worry about her. as long as she still eats fine and the incision looks clean and healthy she will be fine.

Please don't allow her to have kittens (I'm sure you know that). My new kitty was spayed last week. She came home the same day with no problems. She had her stitches out yesterday. For a few days you might want to keep an eye on the incision to make sure she doesn't try to chew on her stitches and to look for any redness. My kitty didn't have any side affects at all. I'm sure yours will be fine.

When a cat is spayed they are going to be in alot of pain, also the vet will tell you not to use cat litter until her incision has healed, he will want you to use shredded newspaper instead. He will also give you pains meds for her. Make sure she has a comfy place to sleep too!
