yes, sometimes you will have to stay. There maybe times when your manager needs help or wants you learn something. In addition, on the days that your manager is not at work (days off, vacations, sick days) you will be expected to take their place. Also, even though you are an assistant and are higher than an associate. You still will be expected to stay late if you manager wants you to. If your manager can't stay late to finish the work, than he/she will appoint you to do so.

Lastly, if you plan on becoming a manager yourself; than yes. You should plan on staying late in order to learn everything you need to know.

This depends on if you mean a manager's assistant, or an assistant manager. One is a manager, the other isnt.

If you are a manager's assistant, then most of the time, yes, it is expected.

If you are an assistant manager, then most of the time, its not expected.

This is a hard question to answer without knowing the full situation. It really depends on what you do for the company, what the company does, and why the manager is staying late as well.

Were you hired with the expectation that you stay as long as needed?
Have the hours changed lately?
Is there something out of the ordinary that is causing the change?
Does your manager expect it? Or do they require it?
Are there negative results if you leave earlier?

Look at those questions. If you decide that you dont need to be staying, make sure you talk to your manager and discuss it. It may be that you'll get the full explanation right there. If you are told you are expected to stay, and its an ongoing thing, then you may need to look for a new job. If its a temporary thing, Id recommend sticking it out, as it shows dedication, and that can come in handy down the line for pay increases.

If the company or the managers tells you so. Best thing to do is to talk to other people who work there and ask them what is expected.

The last job I interviewed at, the boss told me everyone should stay there as long as he did. He could leave early, but I had to stay. I turned it down. (insurance)
