I think there is more than a "kernel" of truth. Most religions seem to have universal themes and recognize an assortment of universal truths about humanity, it's weaknesses and it's potential.

Sometimes, I wonder if perhaps God isn't wiser than us all and MOST religions are basically correct but present God's truths in the most palatable way for those particular people. Wouldn't that be wonderful.

The Gospel's two golden rules sum it up perfectly:

#1 Love the Lord your God with all your heart.
#2 Love your neighbor as yourself.

That, essentially, sums up the most basic teachings of all major religions. If you don't believe in God, though, then at the very least you can live by #2, and we'll all be better for it.

And, of course, this does not factor in people's greedy and selfish interpretations of religion, which many misuse in order to gain status, power, or wealth. But that is not the fault of the truth of religion. That is the fault of the truth of human nature.

I happen to be a christian , bot catholic, babtist, or any of that crap just a believer that Christ is my Savior and died on the cross for me, I too however struggled a long time ago with this same question. I believe that what links us all is there is a creator of everything maybe evolution is involved or maybe not but the world and universe and galaxys all eventually started somewhere thats the proof, everyone when they die probably returns to that energy ( heaven ) the start and the end. God could be someones muhamd or tikki or buddah or whomever but its the begging and end of creation, the laws we live by on earth is probably just a good guide line to live by be nice to others dont kill, cheat steel, etc... it just makes our time here easier, but at the same token whereever you think you go when you die I think you are judged and rewarded for by how your heart truley feels. For example if you think in your heart that rapeing someone is wrong but yet you do it anyway, when your life is judged at the end because you did wrong by yourself you have to pay for that in some way, but I am not sure what way that is becasue hell is where I believe I am at now and Ill keep returning back until I get it right.

The kernel of truth at the heart of most religions is that there is a God. The confusion comes because they don't like the commandments of the one and only True God and therefore they dream up their "do what they want to do" gods.

It is that we humans are easily controlled by fear, that order is easily imposed upon us when there is "something higher" involved, that what we cannot explain through reason we explain with our childish imaginations, that we are awed by the greatness of the world out there and that we feel so small looking at it all, that we need to feel that we are at the center of it all, that there is a child in all of us and that we all need hope to live by and to die with. (This is pretty big for a kernel but... why do you think religion has lasted this long with us and still persists despite the show of force of reason and science?)

Most of founders of the major religions believe in the power of love and peace. Unfortunately this was twisted around by many of their followers.

I think tthe strongest religious thread is the actual belief in "Truth" or the idea that we are here for a purpose from a higher power rather than as a random accident.

The Golden Rule.

"What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow creature. That is the whole law; the rest is commentary." --Rabbi Hillel, first century.

Virtually every spiritual teaching in the world's history contains this in some form.

I think the only common thread is that most of them look to a power that is beyond themselves.

With that being said, I believe that Jesus is the ultimate truth and it is faith in him that allows us to grow fields of crops.
