what MPG should a 3 year old ford focus 1.6 get? dose 33mpg sound ok for a mix of urban and rural driving? Im driving it gentley but still doing the speed limit, using high gears as much as possible without labouring the engine.

I would have expected around 40 MPG especially since I am trying to get good MPG.

I have a 03 i.6 zetec and I get much the same as you. perhaps 35. On a long run it goes up to nearly 40.I don't worry about it as I don't do a lot of miles (11k in 4 yrs) so any saving would not be appreciable.Obviously the more miles you do. the benefits of any economies would be greater.

I have a focus 1.6 auto and MPG varies between 29-42 depending on use and time of year. I would say that 33MPG is ok in general use. Great car and very reliable.

Smooth acceleration and braking and correct use of gears all contribute to fuel economy. Many cars now come with Air con as standard and people feel the need to use it. Running aircon constant will have a detrimental effect on fuel consumption and could contribute as much as 15% of fuel used. The same applies to the many accessories that you fit to a car. Yes even having the radio on does use fuel. The alternator generates electricity. Any item that uses it will cause the engine to work harder to drive the alternator and therefore contribute to the overall fuel consumption. Yes it is a very simplified explanation but anything that uses energy has to get it from somewhere – in this case it is the fuel.

33 is roughly what my Focus gets. It's 4 or 5 yrs old. The best car I've ever owned!!

On hwys., I can go 250-255 miles on 3/4s of a tank and I think it's a 13 or 15 gallon tank.

I know these cars are capable and it sounds like
you are doing everything right. Make sure of tire
pressures are OK. But 33 mpg, assuming you have
taken very accurate readings, really isn't that bad
for mixed driving.

33mpg sounds not too bad for a 1.6, I'm getting that with a 1.4.
