Tony Blair will declare himself a Roman Catholic on leaving Downing Street, according to a priest close to him.

Father Michael Seed, who is known for bringing high-profile politicians and aristocrats into the Catholic fold and who says Mass for the Blairs in Downing Street each week when they are in London, made the prediction to friends at a recent memorial service.

Here are two facts most people may not know,
1st, it is written into the English constitution that a Catholic cannot be elected to the post of Prime Minister.
2nd, Tony Blair has made known his wish to enter the Catholic church for some years now and this is his own personal preference.

So in other words he would have become Catholic while Prime Minister if it had been allowed.

I think it is terrific.

I have noticed a few poster who have lambasted him because it appears (to them) that he was a secret Catholic.

The fact is when he was elected in late 90's he WAS Anglican. His wife Cherie has been a Catholic.

There is a law (Emancipation of Catholics 1832) in England that does not allow ANYONE who is Catholic to advise the monarchy. Tony Blair sure read that, and knowing his position of Prime Minister how can he fulfill his duty to his country and be Catholic?

He could not.

So of course it makes since that he wait until after he resigns. What a great grace he and his family have been given.

Yes this is the 21st Century...and Catholics are still persecuted, and discriminated against even in 'civilized' England.

Mr Blair is perfectly entitled to believe whatever religion he feels.

While I seek through Yahoo Answers to reveal knowledge to both Christians and non Christians, to show hidden knowledge and errors of doctrine, every person is perfectly entitled to their own opinion.

So as much as I find the Catholic Church a moribund and thoroughly corrupt and evil organization, I cannot say anything against Blair if this is his decision.

I think it's fine for him to declare his church affiliation. Why not?

What I do find absolutely ROFL funny is Chippy citing the Bible as his source for anti-Catholic sentiments. Chippy thinks the Bible is fantasy. He has stated that Christians don't believe it either. He knows this because they have jobs. If they had faith, they would not get a job.
LOL

I think that a BETTER question is to ask (or consider the ramifications of) Prince Charles considering (or expressing the desire) to convert to Islam. And considering if he does, and the Queen dies, that England will become the first western nation with a royal ISLAMIC head of state.

Probably due to all that guilt he's feeling about Afghanistan and the Iraq War, not to mention the absolute mess he's made of the UK!!!

He's probably changing over just to get a bit of that hypocritical absolution of sin !!!!

Who the heck gave man the right to forgive another mans sins just like that..........it is God alone Who has the right to forgive sins.

I honestly did not think that freedom of religion was so controversial in England.

I assume there is freedom of religion in England in the 21st century. Am I incorrect?

With love in Christ.

Interesting to say the least. Maybe he will move to Northern Ireland and join the IRA as well.

Actually I lose a bit more respect for him. To say that he's been secretly Roman Catholic all this time and hiding it shows even less integrity than I thought he displayed in supporting George Bush's foreign policy.
