There is really nothing much to recommend Science Diet cat food (I'm actually on groups where it is labeled Science Death). I don't think it's quite that bad.

It's very expensive, highly promoted and beloved of many veterinarians.

Why? Its formulation is 2/3 grains and only 1/3 meat. The formula should be the other way around for a healthy cat food. Around 60% meat and only 30% grains.

The meat used in SD is by-product meat - the least nutritious parts of the chicken - entrails, heads, feet, even feathers! That meat must be treated with chemicals such as ethoxyquin (a known carcinogen) and labled "unfit for human consumtion"

For the same money you can get a high quality food where the chicken meat is much more wholesome, there is more of it, and it is not treated with chemicals.

For some information on quality in cat food you can go to: http://www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article, "Selecting a Good Commercial Pet Food". You should also read her article, "Urinary Tract Disorders in Cats" since you have a male cat. Also "Why Cats Need Canned Food".

I've read Ken's answers on other threads and he knows what he's talking about. Wet food is best (like Wellness or Merrick). Stay away from the foods like Science Diet or Eukaneuba that are supposed to be "high quality" but are basically junk food for cats. Good Luck

Science Diet isn't all that. My male cat had urinary tract problems and our vet told us to buy the Science Diet food to help with this because it had low ash content. Yes, it worked, but a few months later, we started looking into Purina One for Urinary Protection and we tried it out. It worked great and our cat hasn't had an infection in 6 years! Plus, it's WAY cheaper than the Science Diet. Purina One offers a variety of different cat food products designed for all kinds of circumstances...I'd check them out and see if you can find something comparable and save some money...plus, you can buy it at most stores so it saves you a trip to the vet.

Hi

You are lucky. You have some very good quality answers here. Science diet is garbage to be straight forward. Canned foods without gravy is what is best for all cats =. Aside from the fillers and quality, dry foods are loaded with carbs and that can lead to a host of other problems like diabetes, kidney disease kust to name a few amound many.

I wouldn't use it. It uses chicken meal instead of real meat, which means the less nutritious portions of meat. They put a lot of money into vet schools so they get a lot of attention. But, Wellness is the best food to use, it has no chemicals to give cancer, no byproducts, and has healthy portions of meat. In the wild, cats don't just eat beaks, they east the meaty parts to be healthy. Also, if your cat eats just dry make sur eyou have a water fountain to encourage drinking, or they wont drink enough and can have kidney issues later on.

It's been around for a long time. One of the oldest pet food companies. Most veterinarians seem very loyal to this brand. But they usually recommend what they're most familiar with. As suggested before, ready the lables. Compare it with other pet foods. If your cat is thriving on it it may suit your pet.
