Well, the New Testament is mostly about Jesus and his teachings. So, I would have to say since it was not written until after His resurrection...

Very likely, He was taught the OT which is the Torah to the Jews. Since Jesus was Jewish and his mother was a half Levite. He probably had seen a Torah or two around the house. Since He was also the one who would be responsible for the children if something happened to Joseph. I guarantee Jesus was very familiar with the OT.

Jesus went into the temples even at an early age talking with the priests.

DO you think He was talking about the weather? "Hey, I'm going to make it rain today... Have a good day..."

because the NT is mostly about Jesus and why He came to earth to die for our sins- and He did read the OT- he spent many hours in the temple as a child learning from them- even Mary and Joseph- could not find Him, because He was being able His Father's business. After His resurrection Jesus pointed the men on the road to Emmaus to the prophecies about Him from the OT. Yes, Jesus knew the OT due to the fact He was with God from the very beginning.

The Lord Jesus Christ didn't need to read the Bible because He inspired ever Word in the Bible. He is the Word. John 1: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1: 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. Galatians 1: 11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. Galatians 1: 12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

First of all, Jesus surely read the Old Testament -- or at least the very sizable chunk of it that was available to Him at the time He lived.

But you're right in the sense that Christians should not look at the Bible as their ONLY rule of faith.

We Catholics believe that the Bible is a Christian's most important rule of faith -- but not the only one. There's also the Sacred Teaching of the Church as well.

As you sort of alluded to, the earliest Christians had no New Testament to read, mainly because it hadn't been written yet.

Even many centuries later -- a good 15 to 18 centuries later -- most Christians did not have everyday access to the Bible, since many of them could not read and since printing presses hadn't yet been invented.

They relied on not only the Bible (which was read to them at Mass on Sunday, and still is to this day), but also on the authoritative teaching of the Catholic Church. That's the way Christ intended it.

Although your right that Jesus never read the New Testament becuase He's the sourse of it. He did, however, quote the Old Testament showing that He did, in fact, read it.

The Bible is the inspired Word of God as God Himself as the Author. It is all true and without error. However, Jesus gives us His Chruch to follow in the Apostles footsteps by the oral Tradition given by them (the Apostles). Not everything was written down on paper even the Bible says that . (John 21:25) The early church didn't even have a "New" Testament. It relied on the oral teachings of those who followed Jesus.

Considering the number of times Jesus quoted the Old Testament, I believe a very solid argument could be made for his having read it. On at least one occasions he went chapter by chapter through it with a couple of his disciples (See Luke 24). He also opened and taught from it several times in the synagogues. All of the quotes he made from it (including the entire 22 Psalm) were from memory. Kind of hard to do that if you have not read the book.

And as for the New Testament, you might not be aware that large portions of it were spoken by Jesus, and then recorded by his followers. So he did not have to "read" it since he was the original source of the material.

Oh yea of little knowledge!

Jesus never read the New Testament because it was written ABOUT him and his life, silly!

Jesus was educated in the same tradition that all Jewish boys were educated in. He read and knew the Jewish law. He was taught and knew all the scripture that was available that time.

Christians do not "live by the Bible". Christians live by faith that the Bible is the inspired word of God. They live by the grace of God that they will live a life pleasing to Him, depsite their shortcomings.

Jesus probably never did "read" the old testament as the scriptures were kept in the religious meeting places of his day and they were freakin huge! not exactly walking around material but he must have been a really good listener cuz he quoted from it on numerous occasions and he also said that all scripture is profitable.

The Bible was published approximately 800 AD. It is a recording of the history. It is the only known document that near matches it's actual historical original document.

Christian read the Bible becasue it's considered the living world of God.
