I went to a tint shop to get a quote for front window tinting on my 2007 Mustang GT. The guy at the shop said it would cost me around 200 bucks to get this done. 100 bucks for the Tint and another 100 to get some kind of felt. The guy told me that the new generation mustangs dont have this felt so if he doesnt install it, the tint film might get scratched.

Has anybody heard of this so called "felt" having to be installed? If it isn't installed, will the tint film really be scratched?

Yes- this felt material is also needed for Acura's - If you don't get this material the hardcoat of the film will get scratched over time. The material cost is very inexpensive -but the installer will take off the door, etc. We would typically add $25 for this installation. Do some pricing around or check with your local FormulaOne Dealer http://www.formulaone.com

A snippet from the discussion, web page below...

At the place I got mine done the stuck some type of rod in the door lock when it was open to make the door think that it was closed so the window would stay up all of the way. When the tint was done they cracked the windows down a bit (so they wouldn't go up and down when the door opens and closes) and told me not to move them for 2 to 3 days. I highly recommend getting some kind of window felt installed if you don't have it, my tint is scratched and I am most likely going to get it re done with some felt next time.

Added: where on earth are you getting "windshield" out of front windows? Front windows are in the front doors of a 4 door car, not the windshield. READ the question guys.

I'm sure the guy knows what he is talking about, but the windows now days are glued in. I would be careful about tinting the front windshield, a lot of states have laws regarding tinting the front windshield. I would advise against it, as it might impair your vision and cause an accident.

200 bucks would help with some other upgrades to make the car perform better so that might be another alternative for you. good luck

Oklatom is right. I tinted my 06 last year without knowing about the felt. I have 2 small scratches in my tint (one on each window). It's not bad enough that I will get them retinted for or put the felt (moleskin) in the door. As for my windows moving, I had no problems with the standard rise and drop when opening and closing the door.

Karis must not live in California nor know about laws. I always use to get pulled over here in CA either for tinted windows or for not having front plates. I just fixed both problems to avoid this.

i'd say the tint shop does not have experience doin it. Also, yes you can tint your whole windshield, just dont go lower than 20% you may get pull over by cops.
It shouldnt cost you no more than $100. friends and people I know had this tint installed and they never had any problems.
Look for SolarGard or Llumar brands for an excellent custom look.
PS: make sure you get (1 piece) tint, look for computer-cut tint shops.
Good luck!

You know, in some states it's illegal to tint the windshield or front windows. Just sayin'.
