hmmm....i'm chinese but i don't think we use paper lanterns indoors. My dad would always hang them outside with long bamboo sticks.

There are a few different ways that I can think of..
1) you can use clear fishing line and when the lights are low and the lanters lit, will be only slightly noticable.
2) you can try twisting crepe paper around the fishing line to make it more decorative, and to hide the fishing line.
3) a little more interesting, but a little more work, you can use small amounts of fishing line attached to icicle christmas lights that you can tack into yer ceiling.

There is no way by hell or high water, that you can hang chinese lanterns and not look tacky. choose another idea.
