5 years ago I had a high paying admistrative job and then for flexability because of putting myself thru school, I started waitressing full time while taking classes part time. I had done that until now where I have graduated with a degree and want to get back into the admin field. I just don't know if I should list the restaurant jobs or how to list them. I know I need to list the old admin jobs-I was there for years-but they were so long ago and I don't want a scroll for a resume! I am thinking of seeking professional help...what do y'all think?

I wouldn't list the waitressing jobs. During the interview, they may ask why there is a gap, and simply explain to them you were going to school during the time and only worked waitressing jobs. If you do want to list it, I would just list it as a one liner example:

Ruth Chris Steak House May 2006 - December 2006
Waitress

They should be able to figure it out if you put your Degree attendance dates on your resume also.

Good luck to you!

A resume is a total history of your employment. You also list going to school like employment so there is no break in time but this is at the top of the page. Listing the waitress jobs shows that you can multi task successfully. Also, if you volunteer that is important to list as a work source.

List in order of current to past, making sure you put why you left, e.g., school, etc. Make sure at the top of the page you put

Your name
Address
Phone number

Do not put age, place of birth, marital or kid status. This is illegal for prospective employer to ask and you don't need to include it.

Schooling ....... College from to and degree
High school from to

Employment History

Make sure you give a short but comprehensive description of your responsibilities, etc., and include the address, phone number and person who was immediately supervisor

Good luck

why are you going to pay some one to do something you already know how to do? You should put the waitressing jobs so there won't be a big gap of time. and are you saying that you're thinking of NOT putting your admin job? so you think they're going to hire someone who they think only has the experience of being a waitress? Put ALL of your jobs, no matter how long it makes your resume.

I would recommend listing it as 1 line, generic waitressing, then if they want you to fill out an application go into more detail on that. Usually you will also have to fill out an application after the first interview.
