The girlfriend of a pretty good friend is hosting her birthday party at a club tonight. Am I obligated to her a gift? And if so, what do I get that won't get lost in the club and how do I ensure it gets to her? My fear is that it'll be put somewhere for "safekeeping" and disappear.

just buy her drinks. if you feel like giving her a gift do it at another time or take it to the bartender and ask them to keep an eye on it for you (or coat check witha nice tip) or you could tell her you have a gift for her but you kept it in your car and then take her outside to get it and then lock it up for safe keeping.

You shouldn't feel obligated to buy a gift but if you feel you should, here are some ideas: Why don't you just buy her a couple drinks or shots and call it good. Otherwise, get her a gift card or gift certificate from somewhere. She could put something like that in her pocket or her purse.

Take a gift like wine or gift or gift certificate, but keep it in the car if you can. Tell the friend happy birthday and say you've got something in your car for when she heads home. No worries about theft at the club.

Unless the invitation says "no gifts," it's always best to take a gift to a birthday party. Take it to the birthday girl early on and let it be her worry where to put it.

You could always phone her and say, "I have a birthday gift for you. Should I bring it to the club or give it to you later?"

Unless the invitation says "no gifts" you should give her a gift. You could send a card to her address ahead of time with a gift certificate. Maybe to a casual restaurant. Or drop a nice bottle of wine at her house.

It is best to give a gift. I am sure she will get it if you stress it is for her. Give her some lottery tickets.
