First of all parakeets do not smell, if anything smells it would be the cage because you have not cleaned it. Parakeets are cheap and they are really easy to take care of plus are really good pets if it's your first time buying a bird!

* I owned a parakeet before, but the funny thing is that it hated cages and it would always go through the bars to get out, untill one day it got out and the door was open and I never found him. : (

* They are not noisy, they tend to sing more when there is only one (themself) if you get more then one they tend to be more quiet

* They don't poo that much just, I guess normal, how a dog or cat would. They just drop a lot of seeds on the floor (make sure you get something to wrap around the bottom of the cage so seeds don't get all over the floor.

* Very easy, you have to be consistent, if you stop taming them for a month or so they start tending to forget that they where trained and don't want to get on your finger.

* Yeah they are, mine was not scared of dogs what so ever, it's more like the dog was scared of him!

* If you are going to let it out of the cage sometimes to get around, then you should clip-them, but if they are always staying in the cage then why bother.

* I think you should get two, because they do tend to get lonely. Mine likes looking at the mirror all the time now since the other one flew away.
Good Luck!

I grew up with a parakeet and loved it. Ours was allowed out of his cage at times, but if he pooped outside, he went right back in; did not happen often. You line the cage with paper at the bottom and easy to change at least weekly. They are be silly and noisey, but if noisey at the wrong time you can put them in the cage; if that does not work you cover the cage.

We had a dog with no problems. It is the dog that can be the problem for the parakeet so you will have to 'test the waters,'

They are tame. Ours would kiss us on the lips, which scared many visitors LOL

We did not clip the wings because when we let it outside of the cage in a closed room, he could fly around. Clipping the wings in a human way to control the bird from not flying and I personally find it awful.

One or two, start them out together if you are going to get two. But you will need a bigger cage. In the store you see TOO many together which would like me making you and your family live only in your bathroom 24/7.

A parakeet is like any another living creature. The bird requires daily love and attention, i.e., fresh water, food, clean cage, etc. If you are not going to give that attention for the next ten years DO NOT get one.

But if you do and are a responsible human who owns a pet, you will love having a parakeet.

Parakeets can be sweet little pets but like all pets they need a lot of attention. You have to spend time with them but they can be very tame. I had two and really liked them, but they both died over time and I never wanted others.

Yes, they are very messy. They like to fling birdseed all over the place and they do poop a lot, and it tends to get on the walls.

If you have a pair they will bond with each other and not you. If you have only one, they're lonely. A lone parakeet will actually bond with its own reflection in a mirror and try to feed it, which is very sad.

Their sounds aren't so bad. Mine liked to sing along with the TV. They make lots of little happy sounds. They'll screech and scream when scared, but then so do I. ;-)

It's really a judgement call. If you are willing to put in the time it takes to learn about these birds, take care of them, clean up after them, and prove to your mom that you're responsible enough to do all this and your other activities too, then get one. If it's just an impulse thing that you won't stick with, then no.

Easy keepers had them since I was a young kid.
Noisy yes why I like them
do not poo as much as my parrot lol!
easy to tame if you only have one, more then this they could care less if you are there or not, except to feed of course lol!
Our dogs ignore the parakeets.
I do not clip the pair I have now for I do not let them out of there BIG cage.
I like having more then one for the noise. If you are going to play with it and have it out of the cage and such I would only get one.
Good luck with your mom, and there really is no "smell" to them (or my nose just doesn't work anymore?). The noise will be the only thing, only having one should not be that big of deal. Real easy keepers!!

They are relatively easy to keep up with as far as feeding/cleaning.
They do like to talk a lot, they're not quiet. Very social birds, don't get just one. If you do it'll be incredibly depressed. (hence the always 5 to a cage) Get at least 2.
They don't really smell bad that i ever noticed.
It depends on how much you "humanize" them as to how personable they'll be. Some i've k now had owners that always touched and petted and played with them, and they would let you pet their chests and land on your shoulders and give gentle love nips to fingers and earlobes. Others were kept in a room separate from the main life of the house, and were terrified when we'd put our hands in to change food/water.
