Exercise. It is the best thing you can do short of medication. If it doesn't work, however, and your depression lasts for more than a couple of days, a visit to the doctor is in order.

Wow my very first question to answer. Okay this is what I think, first of all except it as an illness, think of it like a headache, you are ill. When you are ill your immune system is low and for me the answer is getting under the duvet and having a recharge. Yes you might waste a day, it might be 2, but just like in the ugly duckling song you suddenly realise you're not such an ugly duckling.
Depression is hard for some people to understand, the person who said get drunk and go on the pull then I have to say thats the last thing I am interested in, being drunk gives you uncontrolled feelings and going on the pull well it just isn't there because you don't believe in yourself.
I have jumped off a cliff, overdosed, sliced my wrist but now I handle it straight, when thoughts go through my head that no one would miss me and I am useless, I then think just get through the day, even if you waste it under the duvet, its not a waste when you wake up and feel good again and you look in the mirror and smile. XXXX All the very best, Gerry

Allow me to answer this question based on experience. First of all, I agree with the warning by Margulis to beware of Dianetics. That said, I experienced depression for a number of years and qualify as a survivor, not a victim. I have been in a psychiatric hospital four times in my life on a voluntary basis and it helped little. It wasn't until I got the help of a psychologist AND a psychiatrist that I made any progress. The answer for me to win against depression was/is this: I don't think of myself as a victim anymore. Bad things happened to me for three reasons, but the most important was a result of bad decisions I made. If a majority of my problems were a result of my actions, then I can change the outcome by changing my action. But, most importantly, I learned to forgive those who hurt me in time. I didn't absolve her of her actions. That isn't forgiveness. But I no longer gave her the power to affect my life. I am no longer judge, jury, and executioner. And that made a significant dent in my depression. Now I treat my depression with a combination of medications and changing the way I'm feeling by changing the way I'm thinking. Best of luck in your quest against Winston Churchill's "Black Dog."

You have to find what makes you happy. Sunlight helps too! Depression should not however be something you ignore. If you continue to try on your own with out sucess then I would consult a doctor. I would however be careful of a doctor that wants to medicate you from the start. They should try something else first.

If it's just a temporary, event-related depression (like following the death of a family member or friend), exercise is helpful. Eat well, take vitamins, and allow yourself to grieve appropriately. But if your depression is an ongoing condition that really impairs your life, the main thing that will help you is medication. See your doctor as soon as possible. And please, please do not think that you are "different" or "sick" because you need to be on depression medication. My doctor said to me (when she wrote out the prescription for Lexapro), "If I had a dollar for every middle aged woman on antidepressants, I could buy a Porsche!"

realizing that I'm feeling that way is usually a start for me. Once I realize that I'm feeling down I usually try and just think of good thoughts. If that doesn't work I usually read a book that usually makes me feel good. I have a book called the Spirituality of Imperfection.
For some reason this book makes me feel calmer and better about life. You should get yourself a book that has the same effect on you.

First off, if you want to be drawn in by the cult that actor, Tom Cruise, belongs to, Scientology, then Dianetics is the book you should read. However, I read that book seventeen years ago when I was 20, and it freaked me out. This cult essentially explains to people that the emotions of anger, sadness, etc, should be eradicated from your life. Also, Dianetics is another word for Scientology. I wonder why Mandi didn't come right out and say it? Hmmmm.....
Anyway, to answer your question, what works for me is eating clean, clean, clean!!!! Cut out the refined sugar, because when that stuff hits your bloodstream and makes your insulin spike, you do have a period of greatness, but the downturn is terrible, and when you suffer from depression it's not a good thing. The kind of sugar that you're body cannot live without is fructose which comes from fruit. You can have as much of that as you want and in great variety is even better. In fact, I go on 24 hr fruit fasts every now and again to clean out my system. I feel refreshed when I go back to my regular clean diet. Also, eat plenty of fish such as mackerel, sardines, salmon--the oily fish. If you don't like fish, try fish capsules or fish oil instead. It's good for your brain and will help with the depression. Another thing you want to take into consideration is the fact that your brain needs Omega-3 fatty acids. Olive oil, avocados--are some other examples of foods having Omega-3's.
Have plenty of raw foods, too, such as veggies. Raw broccoli with lemon is a good snack. How about some carrots, too? Careful with the dip and the sugar levels. You always want to look out for trans fats in fried foods, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, and white breads, doughs and cakes and things like that. These foods are empty and also make your insulin spike. You need "slow-flowing" foods such as wild rice, pilaf, quinoa--complex carbs such as that.
Rome wasn't built in a day, so you're going to look at building up to it. Give yourself time to get used to these foods and be patient with your body. Whatever you cut out, remember, you need to replace it with something good.
Exercise is a very, very, very important role at combating depression. It releases the "feel-good" chemicals in your brain. You feel energized and refreshed. The feelings that people get from exercise is unmatched. Do what makes you happy. If you like to go out for a run--do so. If you like long walks--do that, too. If you like to bike ride--this is a great thing, and swimming, too, as these exercises burn tons of calories if you're looking to lose a few pounds. You cannot go wrong with exercise. The only thing that I would caution you is once you begin, don't stop. Exercise requires consistency and through consistency, you'll notice a world of results and that will bring much confidence. I know you can achieve this as this is proven to be the best remedy coupled with a good, clean diet.
Guage yourself and don't push yourself to the point where you will burn out. With exercise, you need to always leave room for what your mind will hunger for later. Don't try to do everything at once.
I think you'll be on the path to eradicate your depression. The only thing left now is to implement it. I wish you the best of luck and am rooting for you. Take care!
