- all Chinese care only about money. (nothing wrong with being thrifty or frugal....just means spending money wisely. We are not greedy)

- all Chinese men have mistresses (no, most of the ones I know are very faithful and family oriented)

- all Chinese are short (hey, look at Yao Ming!)

- all Chinese men have small privates (ah hum...I don't think so!)

Five misconceptions about the Chinese:
1. Their food in China tastes like the stuff sold in Chinese restaurants in the US.
*In China, the sauces are different, there are MANY more soups, and there are fruits and vegetables that most people in the US have never seen or heard of before.
~To correct this misconception, Chinese restaurants should start serving Chinese food the way it's made in China! It's delicious! :)

2. Chinese people who speak English swap their Ls and Rs.
*While in China and Taiwan (May 16 - August 2, 2006), I never heard a Chinese person do this. There was one Japanese girl who did it constantly, though. The biggest issue I noticed was that the "th" sound was mispronounced as "d."
~To correct this misconception, the media should portray more real Chinese and Chinese-Americans, and comedy writers should realize that making Chinese characters mispronounce all of their Rs and Ls is stupid, not funny.

3. Chinese guys are either total dorks or ultra cool.
*When the movie "Mean Girls" mentioned this misconception, I laughed really hard. Unfortunately, that really is the stereotype for Asian guys! Most Chinese guys are just normal guys though.
~The best way for someone to get rid of this misconception is for them to be around a lot of real Chinese guys.

4. Chinese women are exotic, sexy beauties that are submissive but love being chased after by men.
*There are a lot of beautiful Chinese women... but there are a lot who aren't. There are a lot of submissive Chinese women... but there are a lot who only seem submissive... and there are some who aren't. Some women like being chased... some hate it.
~The fix is the same as above -- people need to meet more real Chinese women.

5. Chinese children are all super-smart and super-gifted. Chinese children get perfect grades in school, play the violin or piano perfectly, spend all of their spare time studying, and always obey their parents.
*Not true! Chinese students have longer school days, are expected to master more difficult material, and tend to be more disciplined in their studies. Their success is the result of hard work, not natural genius intellect or robotic ability to absorb information.
~Correcting this misconception just requires people to think more and assume less.
