My brother has just got tinnitus (constant ringing in the ears). Because I am going on holiday in two hours and do not have time to look it up, does anyone else suffer from it, and how do they get around it. His doctor told him that there is not a cure, but it is driving him crazy. Any help would be gratefully excepted.

My Husband had Menieres and Tinnitus for years. The Menieres finally went away. That is the one that causes major vertigo and nausea.

Tinnitus causes the crackling ringing noises in the ears.

He was always a huge coffee drinker. The Doctor repeatedly told him to stop and he wouldn't. So we learned about
Timed release NIACIN 750 Mg's. (the Pharmacist keeps it behind the counter) This was very helpful. He took it for at least 5 to 7 years. Niacin helps flush out the tiny capillaries that clog and cause some of the problem.

Later he finally stopped coffee, it took a while but the noise finally stopped completely.

Sadly enough he has about 50% hearing loss in both ears, although so did his Mother and Grandmother. So that was a given.

So he can try the two things that seemed to give relief,
the Niacin and stop the caffeine. Which can be in things besides coffee.

Good Luck to your Brother.

I have dealt with tinnitus for many years. There is no cure for it. What I did was simply learn to ignore it. It drove me nuts until I was able to do that. Now, I can only hear it if I listen for it. Background noise sometimes helps. I got into the habit of usually having something on...a TV, a radio...at low volume. It distracted me and one day I simply realized that the tinnitus no longer bothered me.

I feel for him. It's really annoying but hopefully over time, he will get used to it and it won't bother him so much. I know that doesn't really help but unfortunately, it's all he can really do.

No cure I'm afraid, you can get a masker on the NHS which basically looks like a hearing aid. It actually makes noise with the intention of masking the ringing and is apparently less annoying than the ringing itself.
Unfortunately it is one of those things you've got to get used to, live with and move on.
