Another vote for Ambassadors. You can get a 6600 C4, holds 245 yards of 14# line, 6.3:1 gear ratio, aluminum frame, for 90 bucks. This brand is a workhorse for heavier fishing, made tough for the big bruisers. I have one for big catfish, needed a reel that can cast far and take a beating, this one will do it.

If you want a low-profile reel, say for bass, there are good models from Bass Pro Shops and Shimano that fit the bill. I also have a BPS ProLite Finesse reel for bass.

No doubt the Abu Garcia Reels. I have several Abu Garcias. I have a ambassador 5000, 6000, and 6500. I don't use anything else. They are great for catfishing, striper fishing, or fishing in saltwaterl; as long as you clean them when you are finished. If it was me I would buy a Abu Garcia ambassador 5000 and buy an ugly stick rod. Ugly stick are good rods that are hard to break.

Abu Garcia is the way to go. I have 3 5500s. One of which I've had for 10+ years. I used it just yesterday and it still casts like a dream.

As for rods, I recommend All Star and Falcon brands. You can find them for around $50-$70. A good rod is always worth the investment.
