In most cases, it's just an expression. This is like the "Why do atheists say 'Oh God' when they have sex" question.

Because they could easily have died, but they're still alive. The world being what it is, no sensible person expects that earthquakes and weather events won't ever exist.
Real planets are geologically active and have severe weather. It's not a toy world or pretend planet where nothing bad ever happens. Most Christians don't believe in "chance", "Luck" or "coincidence"; therefore if they survived, it was God's doing. They believe everything happens for a reason, even though we may not know what that reason is.
To go further, Christians believe that the world was originally perfect when God created it. The doctrine, as far as I can understand, is that sin, death, disease, and suffering (which I assume includes hurricanes and tornadoes) became part of the human condition as a result of the Fall of humanity in the beginning. When humans decided they wanted to call their own shots, God decided to let them. Whether you agree with that or not, that's what I was taught.
That's not a perfect answer -- the question of why bad things happen has vexed people for centuries -- but it's the best I can tell you at present. No answer will probably satisfy you completely.

They realised they were THIS close to dying but God saved them.
They see The Power of God that He can do everything.... so its time to straighten our act....next time this disaster comes around may be we won`t be saved.
They see the power of God so up clse which previously they probably didn`t see.
Neighbors were going to die one day or the other, if not by natural disaster then by natural death. the house was not going to stay forever. Nor are they themselves going to live forever but this time they got a chance to repent more

HUH???????????
GOD doesn't do evil. That comes from the devil. Everything the devil means for my bad GOD turns out for my good. I thank GOD for everything that happens to me because I know HE has my best interest at hand whether I know what it is at that time or not. When I have a flat tire, I know somewhere down the road something bad may be happening that would be worse than the flat tire and the time it takes me to change the tire, I have avoided the other bad thing. Don't ask me why GOD doesn't stop things from happening when everywhere you go GOD is forbidden entry. GOD is a gentleman and won't go where HE isn't wanted.

because it was by the power of God Almighty that they survived, and no God did not make that storm to wipe people out, when Adam and Eve sinned in the garden of Eden, the world became imperfect, tornadoes, volcaneoes and other natural disasters started to occur.

Who is to say that God causes ALL natural disasters, or ANY natural disaster at all? natural events are simply unusual processes of nature threading along its dynamic path. It's called a "disaster" when it affects humans.......could be purely coincidence when it does so. So it is very much in order that you thank God, in light of surviving yet another element of nature's fury. whew. what a relief!

Because they are still alive! Bad things happen to good people. People are to materialistic and quick to point fingers. If it were not for our faith, we would have nothing better to do than blame others and whine about how bad our lives are like everyone else, where is the diversity in that? We Christians are here so you other people can have something to do with your otherwise pitiful lives...criticize us!

God did not "cause" these things to happen. We live in a fallen world.. a world that is headed for death and destruction. God is where our hope is placed so that we overcome the evil in this world.
