It's a personal preference...
I do it because I like to keep my OS on a small partition, for ease and speed of maintenance and reinstall. The less that's there on my C partition, the easier it is to backup, restore, defrag and reinstall when necessary.
Also, if you install your programs on a separate drive on its own controller, then it's possible to gain a slight performance enhancement.
Plus, if they are installed separately, then after a fresh OS reinstall, all you have to do is restore your C drive from a backup, and your programs will be up and running just fine, without having to reinstall them. And this, of course, is much quicker to do, when your programs are installed elsewhere, since there is less to backup and restore each time.
Plus, in my opinion, compartmentalization is just good practice.

I have to agree with the "because they are morons" answer. I do it all the time. In fact, I don't even partition drives anymore, since they got so big, because it takes forever to defrag several partitions. One drive will defrag quicker. The ONLY reason to install programs elsewhere is that your primary C drive is too small, which is virtually not happnin' anymore. If you only just reinstalled windows, then before you do anything else, do yourself a favor and reinstall it again, but remove all the partitions and make only one. Your whole computer will thank you, and when you defrag, you will thank me. I like that. Hope this helps.

On a pc is really does not matter. Typically individuals will install programs onto a different partition on a server. This gives them the ability to back up all of their data and user programs without really having to backup the entire windows directory at the same time.

Installing in a different drive / directory does not save you from the tedium of having to reinstall every single application on a reinstall of XP; hence, it makes no difference where you install applications; however, most applications, like Openoffice.org, Mozilla/firefox, etc, which come with freely modifiable source code (hence are free, as in FREEDOM), do have to be reinstalled; so simply put them in some other drive.

I have no idea. It's still the same hard drive.
Some people might have two OS on the same system; might have a partition for the cache like with Photoshop. They may have their reasons. But if your system worked fine before with one partition, then carry on.

I agree with Stuart. All software should be installed on the drive that contains the Operating System's Registry.

coz it will prevent your computer from slowing down
when you do not have any partition,
every time you boot it loads all the files included on your hard drive.
it should be a good practice (partitioning)
which i havent done yet
