I got rid of two vehicles in 2005, and I never turned in the plates because I didn't think I needed to. Now in 2007 they say I owe 400 for each vehicle. What happens when I go to court. I can prove I haven't had the vehicles.

You just need to produce a bill of sale for each vehicle. In the state I live in, we are not required to return tags after a sale. You might be able to avoid court if you simply submit a copy of the bill of sale's to the prosecuting attorney. Good Luck!

Most states have a form that should be filed when a vehicle is sold to avoid this sort of thing. It would appear from your comments that your state also requires that you return the plates to the motor vehicle agency. You are liable until you take the proper steps to notify the proper authorities that you no longer have the vehicle. You may be able to convince the motor vehicle agency or a court if you have a properly executed bill of sale and perhaps the person who registered the vehicle after you sold it. Otherwise you have a problem.

Don't know what state you're in, so can't tell you what will happen in your state, but I can tell you right now "Turn in those plates!!!" Hopefully, the bill of sale showing that you got rid of the vehicles will be enough to get the property tax cancelled, but if it doesn't there isn't much you can do besides paying the tax.

sorry your screwed...you always need to give back the plates.. you might be able to get them to knock one of the fines down, but well you should known. In NY you get like 6 days to turn in your plates after a vehicle is no longer registered. If you don't they start charging $20 a day.

well where did u get rid of the cars if you gave it to the junk yard then ask them to give you a reciept so u can prove u didnt have the vechiles if you sold them u should 've had bill of sell that way they can try and cut the taxes a little

With a little luck, the judge will drop the fees. But if you still have the plates, they don't have to. Take your proof with you, also the plates.
