Depends on the babysitter's experience. I wouldn't pay a first time sitter $6. However, if the sitter regularly babysat for me I'd make sure she was compensated. I also have a rule that if I'm running late the sitter gets paid double time. It keeps me honest and she's being compensated for her time. This is true even if I'm 15 minutes late...
Also, depends on where you live. If you are in a rural area it will be less. And, if you are in NYC it will be more. Generally I pay $4 to $6 per hour. My babysitters are new and 12/13 years old. I feel it's fair and so do they - it works for us both.
A piece of advise. If a mom asks how much do you charge tell her. Don't say whatever. That's where the $3 comes in. If you want more say so up front. If either of my sitters asked for more I'd give it. They are just so convenient! And, they live next door. It's a great situation for me :))

$3/hr. If they babysit for several hours make it an even $10. If they babysit over night then $15-$20. You should never pay more than $20 IMHO. When I watch my friends kid she gives me $20 for spending the night. I had a nanny last summer and I gave her $100 per month. Sometimes I didn't even have to pay her, she just wanted some item in particular and I would buy it.
If they are trying to charge too much more, you may as well take them to daycare.
Just rememeber, Babysitting is suppose to be affordable and convienant. Not expensive and hassling. If they ask too much, go somewhere else!

I want to say $6 to $10 per hour, depending on the situation. If it is an hour for you to shop and do an errand, than no more than $6. The above answer is correct in all other forms. You may cause gossip paying $3 and hour, and invite trouble.
Good luck.

It all depends on the area. In my area it is normally $2.00 per hour per kid. But there is usually a discount on the second kid like $1.50 or $1.00. Some babysitters charge a flat rate like $25 a week.

Don't you think it depends where you live? $15 per hour - yeah, you read that right - where I live.
