I was wondering if you guys could answer a quick question.
I bought a Kevlar vest online a couple of years ago that was supposed to offer level IIIA protection.
The vest didn't come with the extra (and very expensive) clay disks that go into the back, front and side panels.
My question is whether the vest itsself offers enough of a barrier to stop a bullet or whether the ranked saftely level applies to the vest with the inserts.

Thanks.

The IIIA vest is good against handguns. It should stop rounds up to a .44 magnum. The chicken plates you refer to are used in addition to the kevlar vest.
These in addition to the 30 layers of Kevlar are designed to stop high velocity rounds (i.e rifle rounds) They are extremely heavy and cumbersome. If memory serves me right the plates are made from a ceramic and not clay. Most of these that were issued to us made there way to surplus stores downtown because we refused to wear them.

So, I say don't worry about them. Most likely if you have one on and someone with a rifle is aiming at you...it wont be the chest they aim for anyway.

Level IIIa should be good enough to stop handguns. I know of 2 guys that got hit by a 44 without the trauma plate and although they got some broken bones, the vest stopped the round.

IIIA, I believe offers protection up to 9mm penetration. It will stop most of the lighter handgun rounds, but probably not the more powerful stuff like .357 or .44. It will also not stop pretty much any rifle round. The plates are the only thing that will stop the heavier stuff and even then, they will knock you on your butt.

In addition to "Stealths" comments...the ceramic/lead/steel plating is to prevent "blunt trauma" a type of physical trauma caused to a body part, either by impact, injury or physical attack; the latter usually being referred to as blunt force trauma. The term itself is used to refer to the precursory trauma, from which there is further development of more specific types of trauma, such as contusions, abrasions, lacerations, and/or bone fracturing.

Personally, I wouldn't bet my life on something I bought online. Your life is worth whatever it costs to get effective protection.

If you're a cop, I'll be praying for you.
