I sold an item on Ebay for £316 + £212 tracked post/packing to a buyer in Australia & was paid by Paypal. The buyers paypal account in 'Un verified' & the payment states that I am not covered by Paypal seller protection policy. I asked the buyer to use some other method of payment to cover myself. Over 10 days later the buyer claims that his account is now verified tho I have no proof of this and has sent a further payment of another £528 and again the payment says unverified & paypal seller protection is not available. This smacks of a scam somewhere.... I've now got over a grand from this person & I have spoken to Paypal for advice, They think its dodgy but in true Paypal fashion say.... its up to you what you do....If I refund the buyer both payments & tell him to forget the deal then somewhere down the line it comes to light that his original payments were false & Paypal reclaim them from my account then that leaves me over a £1000 out of pocket.... is this the scam????

It does seem a bit dubious - who would be willing to pay almost as much on postage as the item itself ? and who on earth pays TWICE ?

In fact, the buyer might now start claiming YOU have scammed HIM ... rather than 'refund' the payment, is it not possible to 'refuse' (or reverse) the payment ?

For sure if you make a PalPay transfer to this guy as a 'refund' it will be seen as a seperate transaction ... I would ask PayPay to REVERSE the original transfers ...

NB. as far as I know, 'unverified' means that the Credit card (or whatever) has not been (or can not be) matched to the addres the owner registered with paypal .. this can happen eg. if you register with PalPay via USA and then use a UK Card to make payements ..

Not necessarily. I've purchased items on e-bay and I paid through paypal and because I had moved, my account said unverified. The money was in there and the payment was sent to the seller. I just had a difficult time getting the darn thing to verify. The seller accepted my status anyway, so I didn't run into any problems. Check out the buyer's feedback. You're taking a risk if the buyer has negative or no feedback.

If you need further help, there is an e-bay community board that helped me in the past. Good luck!

The buyer has the problem if you are selling dodgy goods and not vice versa expecially if they are overseas.

The buyer has to complain that your goods are stolen for which he has no proof and even then it will take a lot for Paypal to allow the buyer to reclaim his money.

In this country the goods would be taken off the buyer and the buyer would be out of pocket.. he would have to prove you seld him the goods and the buyers reponsibility is to take you to court for refunds
As far as I know the seller has more rights in Austrailia.
