I tend to believe what Jesus says. According to Jesus, Lazarus was sleeping the sleep of death.
John 11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
John 11:12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
John 11:13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
John 11:14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
He did not go to heaven at death. Many people mistakenly believe that you go to heaven or hell at death but the Bible does not teach this.
The Bible explanation of what happens after death may be found here...

That is an absolutely fabulous question, which speaks to the question about whether we have a soul that lives on after death and either goes to heaven or hell. According to the Bible we ourselves are a soul. If we had a soul that lives on after death then why would we have
Ezekiel 18:4 - The soul that is sinning, it itself will die
Romans 5:7 - He that has died has been ACQUITTED of ihs sins
Ecclesiastes 9:5- For the living are conscious that they will die, but as for the death they are conscious of nothing at all
That said, Lazarus' resurrection to life was a look at what God will do, through his son Jesus, soon. He will fulfill John 5:28,29 and bring all those in the memorial tombs back to life.

Lazarus was dead (in grave for 4 days, as was tradition, just to make sure the body was dead). Do you know how much a body would decay in those 4 days in an Isreali tomb?
And Lazarus died before Christ, so he would have had to wait for Christ's resurrection before going to Heaven. This is where the Bible calls "Abraham's Bossom", or what is referred to as Purgatory.

Jesus told the thief on the cross, 'Today you will be with me in paradise."
Also Peter and John saw Jesus on a mountain with Elijah and Moses. So they were not asleep. "To be absent from the body is to be present with the lord."
Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead so many would know he was the Christ! that's the reason.
It doesn't really matter where Lazarus was when he was dead. He was probably in "Abraham's bosom" which is a part of Hades (place of the dead, separated in 2 parts, hell and Abraham's bosom) it is NOT pugatory. Jesus paid the price of sin on the cross, there is no purgatory to pay for more sin.

The timing of the resurrection is not in doubt. ( Not temporary one such as Lazarus')
Since John 3:13 states " 13And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. "
From this, we understand that Lazarus did not go to heaven when he died. He like all others had to await in the grave to be resurrected.

This is a hard one - but the answer really doesn't matter.
Most of the time the Bible tells us that we go directly to Heaven but in this case I believe (just my belief here) that Jesus left his soul/spirit inside of him until he raised him from the dead, but just speculation. Jesus wanted the people to see the Glory of God - either way though - anyway you look at it - Lazarus was dead and Jesus raised him from the dead - what does it matter about his soul/spirit. Ours will go directly back to God when we die - for judgment. Blessings dear one and I hope this helps.

For Tricia - suitable after the arrest of Jesus, he became taken to the extreme Priest's domicile. the front became no longer performed indiscriminately. that's defined in John 18:15, 16. it will be talked about from the account that Peter became purely given the front because some different person became familiar by technique of the extreme Priest. also Matthew 25: fifty 4 and fifty six teach that prophecy with regards to the disciples "scattering" became to be fulfilled. And Luke 22:seventy one shows that as a witness, Lazarus' testimony does no longer were given the burden it is going to have. in actuality, John says in his e book in financial disaster 11 and verses 11 and 12 that the manager monks were, in the previous the trial, already hunting for Lazarus to placed him to lack of existence. an same financial disaster of John, financial disaster 12, shows that the actuality that Lazarus became alive became testimony in behalf of Jesus' skill and position. Many got here to Simon's domicile to verify that Lazarus became rather alive. Lazarus were contained in the grave, lifeless, for those 4 days. He became further decrease back to existence from the grave. He became no longer in heaven any time for the period of those 4 days.

If Lazarus went to heaven or hell, don't you think he would've explained how wonderful or horrible it was? Wouldn't that be a logical reason to tell his friends and family about that mind-blowing experience?

When Jesus was walking the earth those who believed in God and did God's will went to a place called "Abraham's bosom." However, when Jesus was crucified, died, buried and resurrected he took all that were in Abraham's bosom to heaven with Him.
Now that Jesus has ascended to heaven and sitting at the right hand of God it is "absent from the body, present with the Lord."
