What I'm referring to, is that you state that the Al Qaeda is continuing to pointlessly murder helpless civilians and are cowardly to fight our military.
The Al Qaeda terrorists believe, that anyone who is not a Muslim extremist, is an infidel, and therefore not only doesn't have a right to live, but it is their responsibility to make sure that they are put to death. An extension of that belief, is that if there is a Muslim person who sides with an infidel, that person should also die. The other ideology that they believe in, is that if they die while trying to follow their teachings, they will go to their heaven and be treated like gods themselves.
So, in their eyes, no matter how much their fight might seem to you, they are winning in their eyes. If you thought that you were winning, would you stop? No...
As far as being a coward, do you think that war should be fought like the US civil war, where opposing forces would stand in a straight line, facing each other and just shoot? That war policy went out of style centuries ago. The old poem, when you fight and run away, then you live to fight another day, applies.
