1. To have a flat stomach, the first thing is that you need to have very low body fat otherwise the situps won't make a difference.
Think of athletes (eg. female marathon runners in their vest tops or swimmers). You can see their 'six pack' because they have no fat on their stomach.
If you are in this position, then you just need to tone up (see step 2). If you are not in this position, then the first step is to reduce your body fat by losing weight (reduce your calorie intake sensibly and up your exercise).
Sit ups do not spot-reduce stomach fat!!
2. Once you have low enough body fat on your stomach, you need to do exercises that tone the upper abs, lower abdominals and obliques. Simple sit ups don't target all those groups. So you need a routine that covers all the groups (eg. crunches, reverse crunches, oblique raises etc).
In terms of how much do you need to do: 4 -5 sessions a week with each session lasting between 10-20 minutes.

It's best to start off with 20 every night before you go to bed. Increase by 10 sit ups when you cannot feel the burn anymore. Good Luck

The only way to say is to do them until you can not do any more, then do two more. Really push yourself to get out those last two.
Do them twice a day if you can.
The key to doing sit ups is to CONCeNTRATE your mind on the ab muscles. Make sure you are using them, not your back or speed to do them.
If you really want to get them in shape faster, sit up, then only go part way back down, don't hit the floor. Go back up.

i go for 3 sets of 30. That's enough.
You still don't know that lots of sit ups doesn't equal fat loss?
You just have to eat well and do cardiovascular exercise. And eat more than 3 times a day, smaller meals..

Situps will not flatten your stomach. They will tone the muscle there. If you have pooch caused by fat then you need to do aerobics as well to thin it out effectively.

sit ups do NOT burn fat - they build muscle and if you have some fat on your belly it will only look bigger
cardio is the only fat burning exercise - 4-6 times a week for 30-50min and combine it with light weight training

Do crunches. They're alot more affective and not as damaging to the spine.
