Jerry Falwell -- who was caught with prostitues -- shocked the world by blaming pagans, feminists, homosexuals and the ACLU for bringing God's wrath upon America.
What more do you expect from a guy who said on national TV that 9/11 was God’s way of punishing us for the homosexuals and abortionists?
Irrational bigotry appears to be a favorite pastime for Evangelicalism today,

No, Jerry Falwell is the Fall Guy (sorry) for a lot of people who want to see Christianity in terms of its extremes. And I don't think non-Americans generally are so unfair in evaluating American Christians.
We all know that most American Christians are pleasant, sensible, honorable people who, like the rest of us, screw up once in awhile. Some of them screw up by trusting too much, especially trusting people who claim to be some sort of intermediary with God.
My own mother used to send donations from her meager resources to Jerry Falwell, because he claimed to be fighting the evils that frightened her. He fed on those fears, and what could I say to convince her that I wasn't just complaining because I wanted her to send me the money instead? It made her believe she was doing something about the things that frightened her, and I suppose in that context, she was.

Jerry Falwell was NOT the model of true Christianity. He may have called himself a Christian, but he was far from it.

He represented what people think the American Christian is, I also think the problem is ppl like Falwell are the one screaming frm the rooftops, and good Christians don't scream at them to get down and shut up.

His success is simply the measure of the problem of religious bigotry, ignorance and intolerance in this country.
"He's gone now and can't defend himself." Well, so what. When you die, people are going to talk about the life you lived. I refuse to pretend he was anything other than the scumbag he was. Death doesn't make him a saint.

You have the right to your own opinion.
And so did Falwell. He is gone now and cannot defend himself. So grow up and move on, please.

If you can stand half as strong for your beliefs that this man stood for his beliefs, you'll end up a man before you die.
