The film is based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, a young Catholic woman from Germany. Anneliese, who was born in 1952, was brought up drinking holy water and being woken in the night to pray. In 1968 she began shaking and could not control her body. A neurologist diagnosed her with 'grand mal' epilepsy and she was treated in hospital. Soon after, Anneliese started seeing devilish grimaces as she prayed. She then began to hear voices saying she would 'stew in hell' and told doctors 'demons' were giving her orders. In summer 1973, her parents asked for an exorcism. Their requests were rejected, but Anneliese’s condition deteriorated and she could be heard screaming for hours, breaking crucifixes, destroying paintings of Jesus and pulling apart rosaries. She also mutilated herself. In September 1975, the Bishop of Wurzburg, Josef Stangl, ordered two priests to perform 'The Great Exorcism' on Anneliese to save her from possession by demons. From September 1975 until July 1976, one or two exorcism sessions were held each week. Her attacks were so strong she had to be held down by three men, or chained up. For several weeks she refused all food. On the last day of the exorcism, 30 June, 1976, she was suffering from a high fever and was emaciated. She was exhausted and unable to genuflect, so her parents stood in and helped her through the motions. 'Beg for absolution' was the last thing she said to the exorcists. To her mother, she said, 'Mother, I’m afraid.' Forensic evidence showed Anneliese had starved to death. And from my research, I am led to believe that she may have also suffered from schizophrenia.
My opinion is that the movie is just another way for those in Hollywood to make more money.
P.S - Demons do not exist.

I think it was a load of garbage. There is no such thing as demonic possession. That movie also made me angry. The idea that in our modern world that Americans can actually subscribe to superstition of this magnitude is appalling. That these people who, basically killed that girl, got away with it is equally frustrating. The family, the priest and anyone who allowed this farce to go on, should have been locked away for gross negligence resulting in death.

I agree with you, probably they changed some things when they made scenario, the movie wasn't scary, but the possibility of truth story is.
There is one weird story about that movie: me and my boyfriend borrowed DVD one night to watch it, and while we were watching it, I got sms from friend that lives in other city, that I didn't heard from a while. She wrote to me; what's up, what do you do? We are watching Emily Rose. When I told her that we watch it too, in the same time, she thought that was very scary and even now after some time she mentions this (LOL)

I wasn't all that impressed with it. Apparently she had Sczophrenia. They can have both visual and audio hallucinations. There was a Dr. in the movie that pointed that out, and wanted to treat her for that, but the religious phyco's thought she was possessed by demons of course, and used exorcism. I think there is the travesty in the movie.

Its a fun flick to watch. A couple flaws that bug me, but fun none the less. As for Annaliese Michel that was a case that in my eyes was just a sick girl who faith allowed her subconscious to fabricate demonic possession as a way of coping with her mental illness. The priest and mentors did not help really.

It's a very gripping drama, not so much a horror movie (although demonic possession is certainly terrifying).
Based on a true story, too.
Catholic priests (and some other minor Catholic orders) are given the power to perform exorcisms if necessary, but they are rare. Many Catholic priests have told me there are millions of people who are demon-obsessed, but very few that are actually demon "possessed" (i.e under complete control).

I didn't know the whole movie was gonna take place in a courtroom. It was OK. I needed more scare though. I liked the part when her friend stayed the night, and found her on the floor all contorted. That was about as creepy as it got for me. I dunno if it's true. If they say it is then i guess it is. Everything on TV is real right???

It definitely wasn't the movie I was expecting. It was more of a courtroom drama than a horror flick.
I thought it was entertaining, but I also found Spider-Man 3 entertaining. I don't believe either to be true.
I love Laura Linney, though. She alone can usually get me in the door.

It was pretty good. (I STILL get twitchy if I wake up at 3am-which happens quite a very lot)If it gets you interested in reading about posession, and demonology, look up John Zaffis, He's the leading expert in the field, and has been for near 30 years.
