I have recently been speaking to my ex(sam). We went out for almost a year. He was my first boyfriend i slept with, and still is the only person that i have slept with. There have been other men since we split up but none of them quite compare to sam. Hes not the best looking, theres nothing special about him but i cant help but love him to peices. I dont know why. He hurt me quite badly, he was never unfaithful but just that he couldnt make the time to focus on our relationship. We've been chatting, met for drinks etc. But i cant stop thinking about him! Its terrible because it goes round and round in my head. He sais that he has changed, and that he realises how much he hurt me and that he wont ever forgive himself for it. I dont know what to do, do you think that we can actually be friends, without the history making it difficult. And what about our feelings for eachother getting in the way?? Please help. Its driving me mad.

I did forget to say also that we have been broke up for a year now. And we have only just started talking again.

Stop speaking with Sam. He knows you still love him and is using that to string you along. Friendships after break ups usually don't work, because one usually cares too much and has been hurt, and believes that being a friend keeps them around. Wrong. Show him that you can move on. It's the only way to recover.

Absolutely... of course you can be friends with an ex. But not with Sam right now - you obviously still have strong feelings for him and need to deal with those first. I'm friends with plenty of my exes, my BEST friend is actually an ex from many years ago. I know it's hard, but you can move on and in time, if you're meant to be friends with him - you will be.

I think that some people actually make drama in their lives that doesn't need to be there. Just go with the flow and NO, it would NOT be a good friendship. Either go for him as a lover or stay away from him completely. That's my advice, straight up and in your face, stop going for the drama and just enjoy life.

No, I truly don't.

I think that once you've crossed the line into a more intimate relationship, it's impossible to go back. There's too much weirdness trying to re-draw lines and boundaries that were once ok to cross but now aren't.

I think that people who think they can go backwards are only fooling themselves and setting themselves up for either embarassment or disappointment.
