The ball of my foot is really sore when I walk on it. There are no bruises, no redness, no cuts etc.

What could this be? It's only on one foot and I haven't done anything to it.

I have had this problem before. Sometimes the bottom of your foot can bruise, however, because of the thickness of the skin bruises are rarely ever visible. Another consideration, if the pain stems from the rear of your heel, would be what they call bone spurs. My father has had problems with these before. This consists of the bone in your heal having a small downward hook on it, almost like a boot spur, and it is almost like stabbing down on your skin from the inside when you put pressure on it. The only thing would be that usually they are evident on both feet, although often more prominent on one of them. If the pain continues for more than 3-5 days I would recommend getting it looked at, otherwise its probably just a bruise and I wouldn't be concerned.

I can tell you exactly what you are experiencing. It is inflammation of the tendons and tissue in your foot. Basically called phelegeitis ( I think that I misspelled it) It can be caused from several things such as too much stress on the feet especially if you are over weight or it could be caused by a medical condition such as Reiter's Syndrome, Gout and so on.

I would suggest a treatment of resting the foot some while taking Ibprophen as an anti inflammatory. Also, soaking the foot as well as rolling a bottle of water along the bottom of your foot to help massage that area and to bring better blood flow to it so that it can help heal it faster.

In a day or so if not better, go to the doc to get them to verify that it is something not more serious.

It's possible it's your shoes causing the problem. If you are wearing shoes that are not padded on the bottom this could be causing irritation to the bottom of your foot. Take Advil tablets four times daily and see if this relieves the pain. If it does you know that it was a form of inflammation. If this continues see your medical doctor.

You could have hard skin on the ball of your foot. If you have then get a pumice stone and rub it quite vigourously to soften it. The pumice gets rid of the hard skin. This should be done when you are in the bath or shower and the water has softened your skin.

I used to kick the bottom of my metal framed bed when I was asleep, it left no visible marks and I wasn`t even aware I was doing it, but I was in agony the following day

That's most probably a heel spur or plantar fasciitis. See an orhtopedic doctor. Take note, I said orthopedic doctor, not podiatrist.
