I have a six month old son and yesterday I fed him apple sauce for the first time. After he ate the apples he refused his bottle and just wanted to sleep. about a half an hour or so later he threw up everything he ate. This continued throughout the night until he was dry heaving. This morning however he seemed perfectly fine and ate his entire bottle. Could it have been an allergic reaction to the apple sauce or did he just have a 12 hour flu?

You can't have an allergic reaction to something the first time you are introduced to it. It takes at least twice since your body has to build immunity to it first. And, like the others said, there is usually some kind of rash with allergies. And, the woman who said that he is too young for apples is not right... 6 months is fine to introduce fruits like that.

Six months is a little young for commercial applesauce (it has a lot of sugar and added stuff) but you cannot have an allergic reaction to something the first time you are exposed to it. He most likely just overate or had a small stomach bug. An allergic reaction is an immune over-response by the body to something. It can only happen the second time and beyond as there is not immune system response the first time. Food allergies are actually incredibly rare as the body destroys most of what's in food in order to use the parts(molecules) to make other things and for energy. Give him a couple of days and try giving him a little bit again (just a little). Applesauce feels more like drinking than eating because it is so juicy and it is easy to overfill the tummy with it, even for adults. Hope that helps, good luck.

It could be an allergic reaction. Did you breastfeed at all? If so then he was probably exposed to them through your milk. My daughter is allergic to peanuts and reacted the frist time she ate them, but she'd been exposed through my milk.

Watch out cause vomiting is actually a very serious reaction.

The person who said that he couldn't have an allergy to apples the first time he ate them is correct...unless you've fed him apple juice before, I would guess that this is unrelated to the applesauce.

Also, not to be nitpicky, but the person above me said that apples are like prunes, meaning, I guess, that they loosen your stool. Actually, according to my daughter's pediatric gastroenterologist, apples are constipating. I was surprised when I heard that because my mom always told us that too much apple juice would give you the runs! (She also wouldn't let us eat too many grapes, walnuts, raisins, or watermelon.)

hard to tell if it only happened once. but a true allergy also has a rash on the body. Waite a while and try it again or go see your doctor for allergy test.

Apples can be highly allergenic...I myself am allergic and didn't give my son apples until he was at least a year. I try to buy organic green delicious & peel them & slice them for him.

Also, apples are similar to prunes, in some manners, so perhaps not a great thing to feed to the little ones all the time!

he could of had a reaction to it - normally reactions are rash, temp, swelling, etc..

leave it a while and then re-try him on a small amount - it might just of been a coincidence

If the same thing happens, seek advise from your gp
