God's names in the Bible?

Question

Names are synonomous with"reputation", and most Bibles have kept the original names of God. The New World Translation has changed all of these names/reputations of God to YHVH or Jehovah.
In the KJV and many other earlier translations, God is referred to as "Lord", "Master ", "Almighty One", "Redeemer", "King", "Majesty", "Father", "Healer', etc..just to name a few.
Since God wants us to know Him by his reputation, isn't it important to know His other names/reputations??

I wasnt going to post an answer to this question. I'm still not going to. But I am going to respond to something that Achtung above says. So, if you rate my "answer" keep in mind that I am responding to Him and not the overall question itself.

Achtung says something so incredibley naive that I cant believe he actually put it "in print".

I have never seen a more clear statement from a Jehovah Witness that goes to prove the point that they follow an Organization, rather than follow Almighty God.

The idea of Jesus, the Diciples, and the early Christians going around and causally using the "name" of God in conversation and writings, betrays a shocking ignorance of first century Judaism. The only reason Jesus "got away" (humanly speaking of course) with using the term Father was because of the Pharisees confusion of exactly what He meant or who He was refering to. At least until towards the end of His Ministry.

Since there are over 25,000 Manuscripts and/or portions of the New Testament, and none of them contain the "YWHW" or "Jehovah" then obviously they (ANY manuscripts containing those names) never existed. The only reason Achtung believes that they must have existed at one time is because "the Watchtower told him so".

By believing this, by default it follows that he believes in a "god" that is not capable of preserving His Word. If God wanted the name "Jehovah" in the New Testament, then it WOULD BE IN the New Testament. The "Jehovah" of the Watchtower is a very weak, puny god.

So basically this is the Jehovah Witness "argument" concerning the name "Jehovah" & the New Testament:

"Jehovah is Gods name. Jesus and the Apostles used this name. But since there is no manuscript or historical evidence that they ever did use this name, I'm going to believe that they did, because the Watchtower Org tells me they did."

Achtung and other Witnesses want us to believe that they are not "brainwashed" and "controled" by that Organization, and yet will believe anything that the Watchtower tells them, even if it is contradicted by 25,000 manuscript copies and the Historical Record.

Achtung, with that one paragraph, you have lost ALL credibility with regards to being an "independent thinker and free agent" with your own mind.

Jehovah is a hybrid call combining the term Adonia and JHVH. that may not the genuine call. A good way to recongize a title from a name is try to add "the" before the word.

I love him so much that I do not need to know his names and reputation because I really know him personally and talk to him daily (prayer.) He is my Heavenly Father and my Friend. He has been with me over these 46 yrs since I accepted Jesus as my Savior, and see me through all sorts of situations both good and bad. He has been faithful to help me through it all. So I do not question his reputation. He has proved to me his goodness and greatness, without me even asking him to prove it. He loves you and he loves me and he loves everyone who rejects him including scoffers like "honest Chris."

Like theBerean I wasn't going to answer this one either. I did give your excellent question a star to bring it to the attention of my Contacts but I am SO tired of constant advertizing on the part of so many of those who have answered your question.

But I just read theBerean's FANTASTIC answer and I want to answer just for the sake of parking your question in an easy to find place on my profile. I will definitely want to read your question and his answer again and again!

These days I have little time to study the Bible as I did when I lived alone. Now I live with my daughter, her husband and their 18 month old son. I have a great time playing with my grandson and teaching him many things which only leaves me time to read The Daily Walk Bible each day (I'm currently in the book of Job). I tell you this because even though I do think of God's nature, I really don't have much energy to think beyond Father and Abba Father.

Yesterday I spent an hour just pushing my grandson in his swing. He was still signing "More" when I told him my arms needed a rest. I spent another hour holding his hand as he walked back and forth across a path of boxes we had pushed together. Then we spent the rest of our time together reading and rereading such books as the Sesame Street "Going Places" book.

I come to my heavenly Father with great eagerness and trust that He will protect me and teach me and be with me and I do this in obedience to Jeremiah 3:19 following my LORD and Savior's example. I come as a little child. My grandson does not know my name but when he hears my voice he comes running. When my daughter says to him "Where is grandma" he comes running to find me.

I pray that the people who don't yet have a clue to how wonderful it is to be in a right Relationship with the Creator will hear His voice and allow Him to be their Father before another day is lost.

Think about it: Jesus and his apostles must have been extraordinarily familiar with the Hebrew Scriptures (the "Old Testament"), and the evidence is that they frequently quoted from these writings. The Hebrew Scriptures use the divine name SEVEN THOUSAND TIMES; would Jesus and his apostles have skipped over "Yahweh" or "Jehovah" when it appeared in the text they were quoting?

Perhaps the most revealing passage is to note the way that Luke 4:18,19 quotes from Isaiah 61:1,2. Scholars universally concede that the passage in Isaiah uses the divine Name and even repeats that Name; Jesus and his audience all understood Hebrew and the scroll was almost certainly in Hebrew (although that is immaterial). Clearly, when Jesus actually read the Isaiah passage he would hardly have replaced his Father's personal name with a generic term (such as the corrupters of Luke's Gospel have done).

As in Luke chapter 4, the New World Translation is quite careful to ONLY render the divine name when a verse or phrase in the Christian Greek (NT) Scriptures seems to quote or refer to a Hebrew (OT) Scripture with the divine Name. That is why the OT has almost 7000 occurrences of "Jehovah" while the NT has less than 300.

An additional example is the way the Apostle Paul at Romans 10:13 quotes Joel 2:32.

(Romans 10:13) For “everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved"

(Joel 2:32) And it must occur that everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will get away safe (see also Zeph 3:9)


Essentially, the New World Bible Translation Committee believed that it is preferable to err (if that is what they did) on the side of magnifying the divine name, rather than share in perpetuating a superstition that hides it.

The name "Jehovah" is an English translation of the Hebrew name pronounced as or similar to "Yahweh" or "Yehowah"; the exact original pronunciation is unknown. The four Hebrew characters corresponding to the letters "YHWH" are well-recognized as the biblical personal name of Almighty God, and are universally designated as "the Tetragrammaton" or "the Tetragram".

For centuries, most Jews have superstitiously refrained from pronouncing aloud any form of the divine Name. They base that superstition on the third of the Ten Commandments given to Moses:

In recent centuries, some superstitious Jews have even forbade unabbreviated EUPHEMISMS for "YHWH"; capitalized terms such as "Tetragrammaton" and (amazingly) even "the Name" are forbidden by such superstitions, and they even insist that "God" must be written as "G~d".

Naturally, the religious and superstitious practices of a person are between him and his Creator. However, in recent decades these superstitious Jews have worked to impose their superstitious sensibilities beyond their religious communities, and onto the entire populace. Thus, although "YHWH' is unanimously recognized as the personal name of God, few today use any form of it in their writings and conversation.

Interestingly, Christendom has largely joined with superstitious Jews in suppressing the use of "Yahweh" and "Jehovah". However, it seems that Christendom's anti-YHWH bias largely devolves from their hatred of Jehovah's Witnesses, the religion almost single-handedly responsible for the growing public recognition that the Almighty God of Judaism and Christianity actually does have a personal name.

It seems that too many are more interested in coddling superstition than in allowing intellectual honesty and respect for the Almighty.

I think it is very important to know the different names of God because each name describes a different aspect of His many-faceted character. It helps with prayer to know him better.

Here are some of the better known names of God in the Bible:

EL, ELOAH: God "mighty, strong, prominent" (Genesis 7:1; Isaiah 9:6) – Etymologically, El appears to mean power, as in “I have the power to harm you” (Genesis 31:29). El is associated with other qualities, such as integrity (Numbers 23:19), jealousy (Deuteronomy 5:9), and compassion (Nehemiah 9:31), but the root idea of might remains.

ELOHIM: God “Creator, Mighty and Strong” (Genesis 17:7; Jeremiah 31:33) – The plural form of Eloah, which is accommodating of the doctrine of the Trinity. From the Bible’s first sentence, the superlative nature of God’s power is evident as God (Elohim) speaks the world into existence (Genesis 1:1).

EL SHADDAI: “God Almighty,” “The Mighty One of Jacob” (Genesis 49:24; Psalm 132:2,5) – Speaks to God’s ultimate power over all.

ADONAI: “Lord” (Genesis 15:2; Judges 6:15) – Used in place of YHWH, which was thought by the Jews to be too sacred to be uttered by sinful men. In the Old Testament, YHWH is more often used in God’s dealings with His people, while Adonai is used more when He deals with the Gentiles.

YHWH / YAHWEH / JEHOVAH: “LORD” (Deuteronomy 6:4; Daniel 9:14) – Strictly speaking, the only proper name for God. Translated in English Bibles “LORD” (all capitals) to distinguish it from Adonai “Lord.” The revelation of the name is first given to Moses “I Am who I Am” (Exodus 3:14). This name specifies an immediacy, a presence. Yahweh is present, accessible, near to those who call on Him for deliverance (Psalm 107:13), forgiveness (Psalm 25:11) and guidance (Psalm 31:3).

YAHWEH-JIREH: "The Lord will Provide" (Genesis 22:14) – The name memorialized by Abraham when God provided the ram to be sacrificed in place of Isaac.

YAHWEH-RAPHA: "The Lord Who Heals" (Exodus 15:26) – “I am Jehovah who heals you” both in body and soul. In body, by preserving from diseases, and by curing them when afflicted with them and in soul, by pardoning their iniquities.

YAHWEH-SHALOM: "The Lord Our Peace" (Judges 6:24) – The name given by Gideon to the altar he built after the Angel of the Lord assured him he would not die as he thought he would after seeing Him.

YAHWEH-ELOHIM: "LORD God" (Genesis 2:4; Psalm 59:5) – Combination of God’s unique name YHWH and the generic “Lord,” signifying that He is the Lord of Lords.

YAHWEH-TSIDKENU: "The Lord Our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 33:16) – As with YHWH-M’Kaddesh, it is God alone who provides righteousness to man, ultimately in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ, who became sin for us “that we might become the Righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

YAHWEH-ROHI: "The Lord Our Shepherd" (Psalm 23:1) – After David pondered his relationship as a shepherd to his sheep, he realized that was exactly the relationship God had with him, and so he declares “Yahweh-Rohi is my Shepherd. I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1).

YAHWEH-SHAMMAH: "The Lord is There” (Ezekiel 48:35) – The name ascribed to Jerusalem and the Temple there, indicating that the once departed glory of the Lord (Ezekiel 8—11) had returned (Ezekiel 44:1-4).

YAHWEH-SABAOTH: "The Lord of Hosts" (Isaiah 1:24; Psalm 46:7) – “Hosts” means hordes, both of angels and of men. He is Lord of the host of heaven, and of the inhabitants of the earth, of Jews and Gentiles, of rich and poor, master and slave. The name is expressive of the majesty, power, and authority of God and shows that he is able to accomplish what he determines to do.

EL ELYON: “Most High" (Deuteronomy 26:19) – Derived from the Hebrew root for “go up” or “ascend,” so the implication is of that which is the very highest. El Elyon denotes exaltation and speaks of absolute right to lordship.

EL ROI: "God of Seeing" (Genesis 16:13) – The name ascribed to God by Hagar, alone and desperate in the wilderness after being driven out by Sarah (Genesis 16:1-14), when she met the Angel of the Lord and realized she had seen God Himself in a theophany. She realized that El Roi saw her in her distress and testified that He is a God who lives and sees all.

EL-OLAM: "Everlasting God" (Psalm 90:1-3) – God’s nature is without beginning or end, free from all constraints of time and contains within Himself the very cause of time itself. “From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

EL-GIBHOR: “Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6) – The name describing the Messiah, Christ Jesus, in this prophetic portion of Isaiah. As a powerful and mighty warrior, the Messiah, the Mighty God, will accomplish the destruction of God’s enemies and rule with a rod of iron (Revelation 19:15).
