Lung cancer can be caused by any extended exposure to breathing pollutants.
It is true that cigarette smoking is the leading cause, but breathing anything in an area that is not well ventilated, for an extended period of time can trigger or wake it up (the cancer)and may be something the body itself cannot recover from.
This includes working in close proximity to known cancer causing agents- ie asbestos- something frequently used in old tunnels.
