if you got it from - lake of fire, well thats a metaphor. Besides, it would be for satan and his angels. Are humans angels? NO
And hell comes from shoal the grave. So everytime the word is mentioned in the bible, you read eternal torture, when in fact it says THE GRAVE.

Well done CANDICE. Good point. Its like you're in a secluded environment where you don't have the right to question or give your opinion.
To us, you come across as preachy and condemning.
But you have your reasons.....

Everything you said here is correct! Sheol is not a place of "eternal darkness" and "everlasting fire" at the same time! That cannot occur... God does not violate any of the laws He created, including the laws of Physics. And He said, "Where there is light, there can be no darkness." So you are right. The "darkness" and the "fire" are both metaphors. They are metaphors for mental/spiritual darkness, and the emotional/mental fire of conviction to bring correction. "Hell" is a place of correction. It abides for "olam" (Hebrew for "an age" - yes, it's also called "eternity", but if you read accurately, the context will always let you know which is meant. In the New Testament, the word "forever" is "aionios" (Greek for the same thing: an "age" or it can also mean "eternity") But why would a good and loving God who created us relegate us to a hell of eternal burning if our lives were lived even 80 or 100 years and we were evil? It says the weights and balances of God are just. How could it ever be just to repay 80-100 years of sin with ETERNAL suffering?!!? That would make God the worst monster of all: you might as well refer to him as EVIL. Jesus HAS the keys to hell and death. Keys are not just for locking people in. They are for unlocking the prison doors and letting people go when their sentence has been served, and the fires of conviction have shown them all of the reasons why they should've chosen to do good, and each time they chose to do wrong. But God says that no chastisement seems pleasant at the present time, but when it's accomplished, then the person who is chastised and changed is grateful (a paraphrase, because it's late and I don't want to reopen my E-sword to search for the exact wording!)
Anyway, brother, as I have said: you are 100% correct. Hell is not a place of eternal darkness. It is a place where God has gotten total victory. That's why the bible says, "O,death, where is your victory? O grave, where is your sting?!" The answer is: GONE! Because Jesus has gotten the victory!
God bless you in the Truth, as I see He already has!

You offer a good explanation. I was thinking how could there be eternal darkness with all the fire and bodies burning all the time. That would produce light and get rid of that eternal darkness theory.

Hey this stuff has been passed down...this is what most people are taught (in church, by family etc), it is not like we all got together and said,"hey go to Yahoo Answers and lets say that hell is eternal torment."
Why would you ask the question like we brought up the whole idea ourself one day? Why not say where did the teachers (preachers, priests, etc) get the idea from?

Read Revelation 20:14-15. You will see the truth.
BTW Outer darkness is Matthew 8:12 (He is talking about Israel) and LUKE 22:13 is about judgment.
If you read them you will understand better.

actually... outer darkness could be referring to somewhere out in space... perhaps like one of those black-holes.
grave just refers to where the physical body is put at death. all the rest of it has to do with where the soul goes. sheol is speaking of the underworld that's like spiritual incarceration. the lower part of what used to be Abraham's bosom.
its intended as a holding pen for all rebellious demons - fallen angels.
