i would be really REALLY careful about alcohol intake- there is so much sugar in alcohol, even beer...but especially mixed drinks, etc. i would cut cold turkey or research very seriously about what specific sugars you need to avoid and which alcohols contain the most...but, again, no booze might be the key...

Absolutely. Alcohol breaks down into sugar. As for the cholesterol if it is high it is probably a good idea to stay away from it just for the caloric content and sugar.

I work with a person who is a Type I diabetic and occasionally drinks alcohol at social functions (a couple of beers). When he is drinking, he checks his blood glucose every 10-15 minutes. He stops drinking when his blood sugar rises, and then monitors every few minutes and sometimes takes additional insulin. I'm not sure this approach would be safe for Type II diabetics.

Even if the alcohol you are drinking is not high in sugar
the alcohol effects your body
some people who drink will end up with low sugars and can be fatal
if your sugar is on the low side when you start to drink
normally your liver will kick in and process fat cells and your sugar will go up
but if you have been drinking for each drink your liver will not process fat for half an hour because it has to deal with the alcohol
so you should eat before but on the other hand if your are drinking stuff with allot of sugar your sugar will go up.
For most people with diabetes it is OK to have one drink but that is it and they should eat before and stay away from the ones that has allot of sugar in it.
also account for the carbs in the drink beer has allot of carbs in it

Yes, alcohol is a carbohydrate and you have to limit carbs with diabetes. No alcohol is the rule. If you are just watching your sugars, drink in moderation. Avoiding it is best. Learn to drink a diet soda. And if you are in a bar, order your own diet 7-up in a drink glass with a twist of lime. It will appear that you are drinking a gin & tonic and no one will be asking, "Why aren't you drinking?"

Yes... I am diabetic and the alcohol cause your sugars to rise and doesn't do any good for the cholestrol either.
