There are a variety of conditions causing cartilage loss. If the problem is limited to your knee(s) then it is not likely to be an autoimmune problem such as rheumatoid arthritis. So, the next most common causes are from physical damage to the cartilage that result in a rough or uneven surface where the joints rub together. This can occur from a tear in the meniscus (the cartilaginous portion of the bones), insufficient blood supply to the knee cap or meniscal cartilages, imbalanced strength or flexibility between the front and back muscles or tendons, or improper tracking of the knee cap.

You should find out from your doctor exactly what the problem is because some of these things can be fixed with stretching and exercise, or even an orthotic shoe insert. Ask the doctor to send you to a physical therapist that can show you the exact exercises and other treatments you need to do. Cartilage can heal when you are in your 20s as long as it has a good blood supply (something that can be managed using ice therapy), and the thing causing the problem in the first place is corrected.

Sounds like arthritis I don't know your history or how this happened but I don't think you will be in a wheel chair at all. You should go to a specialist and they will explain everything you need to know.
