I think a salad luncheon would be easy, not too expensive, and it could mostly be made the night before.
Someone mentioned a strawberry/chicken salad that sounded good, seven-layer salad, taco salad, macaroni salad, a fruited molded jello salad, even a relish tray with dip could be included.
Buy an assortment of crackers, or buy some rolls and butter.
Serve ice tea bought at the grocery, and you are done, except for the cake. There will be cake, won't there? A decorated one from a store, or a gooey choclate homemade one would work. Carrot cake with cream cheese icing, or a lemon cake would be nice, too.

We have done tons of baby showers and have done it all some of our family favorites are..........pacifiers made out of lifesavers....................diapers folded from dinner napkins.......put mustard in a few before you fold them and the people with the "poopy" diaper get a prize.................serve "Baby Veggies" on a relish tray(baby corn baby pickles, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots etc.
Put the punch in a baby bath tub and float a rubber duckie
serve punch in baby bottles with holes cut in nipples. These idea will work for a FUN crowd but not sophisticated shower if thats waht your wanting .If thats the kind of shower you are having then Id just do a simple appetizer buffet with finger foods and a punch and cake. If you need help or want to know more about some of these ideas email me at aol carrielynn68 and ill be glad to share!
Good Luck!

A self serve buffet is always a good idea, and a punch is a good drink to offer. You can do a web search to get some recipes.
This is a great site for loads of party games to play.

Sandwich tables are good. Get a deli tray with meat and cheese, set up mayo, mustard, and butter with those little steak buns. Also triffle, its cheap and you can make a lot of it. Layer chocolate cake, chocolate pudding, cool whip, and some sort of chocolate candy (I like to use junior caramels but you can buy bigger bags of a similar candy in the baking aisle). Then top with strawberries. You can also make a vanilla one with white cake, vanilla pudding, fruit cocktail, cool whip and strawberry jell-o. Also salads(potato and macaroni) and rolls.

whatever you do, please don't make tea sandwiches. i don't think anyone really likes them; they're just too polite to say anything. i think that a strawberry, almond, spinach salad with grilled chicken is tasty and healthy. great french bread with herbed butter would be good. (paula deen has a good recipe in her book). i think a fancy punch is great for a shower. it looks great, and people can help themselves. good luck with the shower!

tea sandwiches, finger foods--chips&dips, salads, fruit, vegetable platter and soda and cocktails. Don't forget the cake and treats...go with those mini ones, cream puffs and eclairs oh my...goodness. Get it catered or go to your local B.J's or Costco or Sams Club and get it all at once.
