I gave Cymbalta a chance for a little over a month, but it made my depression and anxiety much worse than I was before I started taking anything. My doctor is switching me to Celexa (calling Rx into the pharmacy) so as far as I know there will be no 'weaning off' process to go from the Cymbalta to the Celexa. Everywhere I've read online talks about withdrawals when getting off Cymbalta whether it be tapered off or cold turkey. How much do you think I'll be affected jumping straight into Celexa?

Thanks for the responses so far... to Disney, I know exactly what you mean... I never really had suicidal thoughts before (and I still would never do it so this isn't a "cry for help" or attention) but on this horrible drug all I could think about was how much I hate my life and don't want to live anymore... I never felt that bad or hopeless when dealing with real depression off medication... or if I did it would only be a day or two, not the majority of a month... :(

Wow I can't believe this question was asked. I just stopped taking Cymbalta a month and a half ago.I had previously been on Celexa but Psychiatrist thought that it might be good to switch. After she did I had never felt so miserable in my life. I am in my thirties with a great job and all I could think about was how to end my life. I have a counselor she said that it was the new medicine (cymbalta) talking. I went back to the psychiatrist immediately. She said she had only seen 4 people in her career react that way to Cymbalta. But took me immediately off. She also prescribed Provigil. Provigil was originally approved for narcolepsy but has been shown to have a "kick in the butt" approach to depression. The next morning I took the Provigal, and instead of laying in bed feeling like death, I got up, took a shower and actually started appreciating life again. I am now taking Celexa and Provigil. My doctor is still amazed at how quickly and drastically my mood changed from complete dispair, to fairly functioning. I was supposed to taper off the Cymbalta, but didn't. I did not want that chemical to be in my body for one more minute. I had no withdrawal effects. May also be because she introdced the new drug Provigil with it... Warning though if you are thinking about asking your doctor about Provigil make sure you have great health insurance or the doctor has lots of samples. I had to jump though a ton of hoops to get it approved, with out insurance approval, it was going to cost $650.00!!! for a months supply.. Hope this helps, but it a very recent experience for me and strange to see that someone else is switching away and to the same med. Good Luck!

I am on Cymbalta for anxiety (60mg). I have been on it for about 2-3 month and I have definitely noticed a change. My doc put me on it because it is a SNRI (acts of serotonin & norepinephrine) and not a SSRI (just serotonin) because I was on Lexapro (SSRI) 4 years ago for depression and I didn't notice anything. This time I needed it for anxiety so my doctor just tried SNRI this time to begin with. I definitely have noticed that my repetitive thoughts have stopped and I am able to go in public places with less anxiety. I also have muscle aches where I was taking ibuprofin every other day and now I notice that the pains are diminished and I only take ibuprofin maybe once a week. In the beginning, it upset my stomach and I had a bit of insomnia, but after my body got used to it I do not have these symptoms. The only thing I notice is that when I forget a dose, I will have noticably strange dreams or nightmares but other than that I love this medication. As for celexa, I have not tried that. Hope this helps!

i don't know about cymbalta... but I have taken various other anti-depressents... then switched to celexa w/o any w/drawal problems at all. i also came off celexa w/o w/drawal and switched to wellbutrin... then added zoloft and I've been fine. Hope you start feeling better. Celexa has a reputation for taking effect fairly quickly, usually a couple of weeks... but sometimes it can take a bit longer. If you are seeing a regular doctor for your meds, i highly recommend seeing a psychiatrist. They specialize in working with those type of meds and I usually see a psychiatrist for a few months... then, once all is stable, i go to my regular Dr. for refills.

You'll only get withdrawal if you stop taking any medication. Since you are just switching, you won't have that issue.

I would call your Dr. and ask about the tapering off process. He may have forgotten. Ask the pharmacist this question also.
