I think they suggest he not carry his cell phone in the chest pocket of his shirt or jacket, and use the ear opposite the generator in his chest when using the phone.

microwaves of any grade are not an issue for many pacemakers used today.

This is a question for his cardiologist, no one else can answer it for you. It depends on what other conditions he has. I find it hard to believe that this was not discussed in length with him before and after the surgery. He should have also been given literature about this.

When my father had his first pacemaker put in, he met with an entire team of professionals, including a dietitian, it is standard procedure here.

he needs to avoid commercial grade microwave ovens, the one in the home is not usually a problem.
as for diet, he should be on a healthy diet, but unless he has heart disease along with his need for a pacemaker, no special diet is required.
